In the presence of Quraish Shahsawar, Abdullah Ibn Zubair ‘may Allah be pleased with him’ (Part 4)
Abdullah’s Defense of Usman, May Allah Be Pleased with Him, on Yom Al-Da’ar
Before we delve into the main topic, it is essential to have a brief discussion about the “Yom Al-Da’ar” incident to clarify our primary purpose. Sheikh Ahmed ibn Abbas writes that “Yom Al-Da’ar” is the day when the house of Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, was surrounded by rebels.
Following the martyrdom of Hazrat Syedna Umar Farooq, the righteous second caliph of the Muslims, the seditionists began their corrupt activities, seeking to spread discord among the Muslims. A dispute arose over who would become the caliph after the second caliph and who possessed the right to lead the imamate. Some defended Hazrat Syedna Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, believing he was the rightful candidate, while others considered Hazrat Syedna Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, worthy of this position and pretended to be his defenders.
The rebels came and besieged the house of Hazrat Syedna Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, leading to his martyrdom. This is supported by expressions found in various historical texts.
As an example, I will limit myself to a few narrations that exist in the book “Life of the Companions” and those who want to know more and inquire about this issue, can refer to the book itself.
In the book “«حیات الصحابة» Life of the Companions” it is stated under the title “Usman’s refusal to fight on the day of the siege in his house” and its translation is as follows: “Ahmad narrated from Ayesha that she said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Call one of my companions for me. ” I said: “Abu Bakr?” He said: “No”, I said: “Umar?” He said: “No”, I said: “Your cousin Ali?” He said: “No”, I said: “Usman?” “Yes,” he said. When Usman came, the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said to me: “Go aside” and he was telling him something secretly, and Usman’s color of face changed. When “Yom al-Da’ar” came and he was besieged in it, we said: “O Amir Ul Muminin! Aren’t you fighting?” He replied: “No, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, entrusted me with a promise and I will wait for it with my soul.”
Ibn Sa’ad and Ibn Asaqer have narrated from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: “On Yom Al-Da’ar, I came to Usman and said: “Amir Ul Muminin! “The fight has become halal.” He said: “O Abu Huraira! Does it make you happy to kill all the people and me?” I said: “No”, he said: “By Allah, if you kill one man, it is as If you have killed all the people.” Then I returned and did not fight.”
Ibn Sa’ad narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “I said to Usman, may Allah be pleased with him: “O Amir Ul Muminin! There is a victorious group in your house, and Allah gives victory to even less of them, so allow me to fight.” He said: “I swear you about a man,” or he said: “I remind Allah about a man whose blood shed because of me, or sheds blood because of me.”
Again, Ibn Sa’ad narrates from him that he said: “On Yom Al-Da’ar, I said to Usman, may Allah be pleased with him: Fight with them; Because swear by Allah, Allah has made fighting them halal for you.” He said: “No, I swear to Allah, I will never fight with them.”
He also narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Amer, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “Usman ‘may Allah be pleased with him, said on Yom Al-Da’ar: “Your greatest defender from me is the person who restrains his hand and weapon.” It is also narrated from Ibn Sirin that he said: “Zayd bin Sabet came to Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: “These are the Ansar who are near the gate, and they say that if you wish, we will be the Ansar of Allah again.” Usman said: “But no war.”
There is also a narration from Ibn Sirin who said: “On that day, there were seven hundred people in the house of Usman, and if he had allowed them, they would have killed the rebels and driven them out of Medina Allah willing.” including those who were with him; Ibn Umar, Hasan bin Ali, and Abdullah bin Zubair, may Allah be pleased with them.
Also, there is a narration from Abdullah bin Sa’eda, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “Saeed bin Aas came to Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: “O Amir Ul Muminin! How long will you hold our hands? These people have eaten us, some of them shot us with arrows, some of them hit us with stones, and some of them have raised their swords, so order us to do what you see necessary. Usman said: “I entrust to Allah, because we will gather in front of our Lord. But about the war, I swear to Allah, I don’t want a war with them, and if I wanted a war with them, I would hope to be saved from them; But I entrust them to Allah, and I also entrust the one who gathered them to me. I will not order you to fight.” Then Saeed said: “I swear to Allah, we will never ask you about anyone, and he went out and fought until he received a fatal wound in his head.”
In short, Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (RA) was among those who fiercely defended Hazrat Usman (RA) and received many wounds against enemies and evildoers that did not heal until the end of his life and remained fresh. It has been narrated that Abdullah bin Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him, gave a speech in Makkah and said: “On the day of the defense of Usman, may Allah be pleased with him, more than ten wounds were inflicted on my body, and I am touching those wounds today, and I hope they will be considered among my best deeds.”
