The Biography of the Sword of Allah: “Khalid bin Walid” may Allah be pleased with him (Part 55)
The Wise Organization of Khalid for the Army
Allamah Abu Zaid Shalabi, may Allah have mercy on him, writes: After Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Army, he began to organize the Mujahideen and arranged the ranks in a manner that had never been seen before, neither among Arabs nor among non-Arabs.
He divided the entire army of Islam into forty groups and explained the reason for this division. In one of his speeches, he said to the Mujahideen: “Your enemies have turned to arrogance and rebellion due to their large numbers. Know that no war arrangement is more impressive and important in terms of awe and significance than the division of large groups into smaller categories. For this reason, Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, first divided the entire army into four large groups: the front of the army, the heart of the army, the right wing of the army, and the left wing.”
The Front of the Army
Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, in the first stage, prepared a front and leaders for the whole army and included a large group of the Islamic army in it, appointing Hazrat Qabas ibn Ashim, may Allah be pleased with him, as its commander.
The Heart of the Army
In the second stage, Khalid addressed the heart of the army and divided it into eighteen groups. He appointed Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah as their commander, among whom were Hazrat Ikrima and Hazrat Qahqaa ibn Amr.
The Right Wing of the Army
After organizing the heart of the army, Hazrat Syedna Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, focused on the most important group of the army, which was the right wing, and divided it into ten groups. He placed Hazrat Amr bin As, may Allah be pleased with him, as their leader. Hazrat Sharahbil Ibn Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, was also among them.
The Left Wing of the Army
Then, Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, divided the left wing of the army into ten groups and appointed Hazrat Yazid ibn Abu Sufyan (RA) as their commander. He also appointed a commander for each of the small groups under the command of the three larger groups, ensuring that everyone would follow them and obey their respective commanders.
Court of Justice and Fairness
After organizing the Islamic army into groups, Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, established a court for the entire Islamic army because the wars of that time lasted several months, and there were many cases and incidents that required the formation of a court and a person to serve as a judge to resolve people’s issues. He appointed Hazrat Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, to this high position.
Reciting and Speaking Among the Mujahideen
When the Holy Prophet of Islam, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, faced the polytheists in the decisive battle of Badr, he selected some of his companions as reciters and others as speakers so that, in critical moments, they could deliver inspiring verses of fighting and martyrdom in the way of Allah and motivating speeches to encourage the Mujahideen of Islam to face the enemy.
Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, chose Hazrat Meqdad as a reciter to recite the blessed Surah Anfal for the Mujahideen in critical situations. He chose Hazrat Abu Sufyan as a preacher of the army. He would move among the troops, standing before the groups, and preach like this: “Don’t forget Allah Almighty! Know that you are of the Arab race and the helpers of Islam, while the enemy is from the race of Rome and the friends and helpers of polytheism. O Allah! Today is one of your most important days. O Allah! Send down Your victory upon Your faithful servants!”
Forming a Supply Office for Better Organization of the Army
As seen in the above matters, Hazrat Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, truly established remarkable arrangements and military maneuvers for this newly arrived army in the land of Sham. However, he was not satisfied with this and, to organize it better, he created a supply office and appointed Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Masoud as its bookkeeper to prepare food, water, bread, etc., for the Mujahideen and to provide them with a bill for distributing the food.
It is clear from these actions of Hazrat Khalid bin Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, that at the moment he assumed command, he undertook many initiatives that strengthened the Muslims, raised their morale, and awakened their epic and religious spirit, along with a sense of sacrifice and readiness to face the enemy. These good actions were not only beneficial for the Muslims but were also terrifying for their enemies, as they diminished the latter’s will and determination.
