The Commemoration and Tribute Ceremony for the Biography, Personality, and Services of the Greatest Scholar of the Islamic Nation, Imam Azam Abu Hanifa (May Allah Have Mercy on Him) was a significant event held on 19th November 2024.
The ceremony included a prize distribution for the winners of an essay competition on the biography of Imam al-Azam, organized by the Kalemaat Scientific and Media Department. Held in the central hall of Kabul University, the event attracted a large gathering of scholars, professors, and university students.
The session commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Hafiz Siddiq Ullah Mohsin. Several scholars and dignitaries delivered speeches throughout the event.
Sheikh-ul-Quran wal-Hadith, Moalem Jan “Hanafi,” spoke about the life of Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A), noting: “Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A) was born in Kufa, a city that had received special attention in the field of knowledge since the era of Hazrat Umar (R.A.). He was nurtured under the guidance of esteemed teachers such as Hammad ibn Sulayman and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi’i. Prominent figures like Abdullah ibn Mubarak were among his students and regarded him as the greatest Imam of their time. Imam Abu Dawood also recognized him as a leader in the science of Hadith. Most of his teachers were direct students of the Sahabah.”
Sheikh Amir Jan Saqib, Deputy Director of the Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan, highlighted: “One of Imam Abu Hanifa’s (R.A) students, Imam Ahmad (R.A), authored 999 works. If a student could achieve such scholarly heights, imagine the level of knowledge of his teacher. This underscores the greatness and vast knowledge of Imam al-Azam Abu Hanifa (R.A).” He further added, “Imam al-Azam Abu Hanifa (R.A) was a great scholar of Hadith, having mastered hundreds of thousands of narrations.”
Sheikh Abdul Mu’id Abu al-Jarad, Dean of the Sharia Faculty at Kabul University, emphasized that even those who oppose the school of thought of Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A) acknowledge indirect references to him in the sayings of the Prophet (PBUH).
Sheikh Azizur Rahman Mansoor, Deputy Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, spoke about the piety of Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A), stating: “The greatness of Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A) stems from his piety and Allah-consciousness.”
The event concluded with awards presented to the top 10 participants in the essay competition titled Dimensions of the Life of Imam al-Azam Abu Hanifa (R.A), organized by the Kalemaat Scientific and Research Department. Over 250 essays in Dari and Pashto were written and submitted for this competition.
