In Islamic Sharia, religious matters are divided into two types: one is that which can be understood with reason and wisdom and without the need of anyone’s explanation; And the other is those that are related to the unseen and are not understood by reason and wisdom, but are understood through religious texts such as the verses of the Qur’an and the hadiths of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. One of these issues is the issue of the punishment of the grave, the question of Nakir and Monkar, and other situations related to it. The issue of punishment in the grave and the question of Nakir and Monkar are among the issues that most Mu’tazila deny. In this section, we try to express the views of Ahl-sunnat and Mu’tazila in the light of their reasons.
Mu’tazila’s view on the punishment of the grave:
The Mu’tazila sect is divided into two groups regarding the punishment of the grave: the first group denies it and some agree with Ahl-sunnat and Jamaat. In this section, we express the opinion of those who deny the punishment of the grave and answer them.
Ibn Hazm writes in the book “Al-Fasl”: “Zarrar bin Amr, one of the Mu’tazila sheikhs, is a denier of the punishment of the grave. Of course, it should be known that it is not only Zarrar bin Amr who believes in this, but other Mu’tazila people also believe in this. The author of the book “Sharh al-Mawaqif” writes: “Zarrar bin Amr, Beshr Merisi and many of the later Mu’tazila deny the punishment of the grave.
Allamah Ashari, may Allah have mercy on him, says: “The Mu’tazila have denied the punishment of the grave
Allameh Taftazani writes about the Mu’tazila’s point of view: “Some of the Mu’tazila and Ravafiz deny the punishment of the grave and say: the dead is inanimate, it has no life, nor understanding, so it is impossible to punish it.
Imam Qurtubi, may Allah have mercy on him, says: “A group of Mu’tazila such as Zarrar bin Amr, Beshr Merisi, Yahya bin Kamel, etc., have completely denied the punishment of the grave and say: Whoever dies, he will be in his grave forever until the Day of Resurrection. He is dead.
