The Biography of the sword of Allah: “Khalid bin Walid, may Allah be pleased with him” (Part 57)
Hazrat Khalid (May Allah Be Pleased with Him) During the Reign of Farouq Azam (May Allah Be Pleased with Him)
In the previous sections, the bravery of Syedna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) during the era of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) has been discussed. It is clearly shown that he played an important role during the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and reached the heights of victory and conquest.
From the Arabian Peninsula to Yemen, from Syria to Iraq, and from Persia to the lands of Rome, all bear witness to the bravery of Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him), and all are indebted to him for his unceasing services.
We will realize from a brief look at the past sections that Syedna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) served with honesty and loyalty during the era of Prophethood and the Caliphate of the first Caliph, risking his life and limb. He fell prey to enemies and was wounded many times, but he was able to save himself from these dangers with the help of Almighty Allah and his vigilance.
Now, in this section, we want to discuss the operations and conquests of Khalid during the caliphate of Farouq Azam, the second caliph of the Muslims, Syedna Omar Ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and evaluate the battle scenes from the perspective of history and Sirah.
A Short Passage to the Battle of Yarmouk
As already stated in the previous pages and sections, the Battle of Yarmouk was a decisive war fought between the Muslims and the Romans in the land of Syria under the command of Hazrat Khalid ibn Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). The Roman army, armed to the teeth with all its war equipment and powerful pride, was decisively defeated by the Islamic army and fled.
During this war, the news of the death of the first Rashid Caliph, Hazrat Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), reached the Muslims, and the letter dismissing Hazrat Khalid ibn Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) from the command of the Syrian army was read from the first Caliph of the Muslims. But after the Romans were defeated, where did they go? What role did Hazrat Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) play? What was Hazrat Syedna Omar’s behavior towards them?
Conquest of Damascus, Fahal, and Homs
After the Romans were defeated in the land of Sham, they retreated to a city called Fahal. The city of Damascus was considered a strong fortress for the Romans. They did not want to lose such an important stronghold; therefore, a well-equipped army moved from the land of Homs to assist the people of Damascus.
Hazrat Abu Ubaidah, who was the commander of the entire army, wrote a letter to the second caliph of the Muslims, Hazrat Omar Ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), asking for guidance on the priority of the attacks: Fahal or Damascus? In response to his letter, Hazrat Omar instructed him to start with the city of Damascus and then proceed to Fahal and Homs.
Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a group to Fahal and another group to Homs to defend the Muslims as a shield, while moving a large contingent to the city of Damascus. In this way, he prevented reinforcements from reaching the Romans.
