Biography of Sayyidna Umar Farooq “MAPH” (6th part)
Examples of Farooq’s justice and sympathy
The attribute of servitude and compassion for Allah’s creation was unique in his existence, for more information about him, some of his events are mentioned:
He used to go out of the house and go on patrols to find out about the condition of his serf. In one of the years of Umar’s caliphate, a great drought and famine occurred in the land of Hijaz, this year was known as “Aam al Ramad” among Arabs. During this period, he generally refrained from eating oil, wheat and meat, dry barley bread and sometimes olive oil was rubbed on it and eaten by him, one day he Looked at his stomach and said: until Allah removes this famine from Muslims, you will not get any more food. During this famine, due to the abundance of poverty and eating inappropriate food, the color of his blessed face turned black.
In order to avoid problems and famine, Hazrat Umar wrote a letter to his governors in other lands to send wheat to Medina. Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah may Allah be pleased with him, the governor of Sham, sent four thousand camels of wheat from Egypt by sea, and it was distributed among the people of Medina at the same rate as wheat was bought and sold in Egypt. During this famine, he distributed the “dirhams” that existed in Baitul Mal to the poor and needy, until finally this famine was removed with the blessing of his prayers.
His actions and justice are known and famous everywhere, with his own hand he executed Allah’s limits on his son “Abu Shahma” in public. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, found out about the matter and wrote a letter to Amr: O Amr bin As, I am surprised at your courage, how you did against my order! Therefore, I have no choice but to dismiss you; because you punished “Abu Shahma” in your own house because he is the son of Amir al-Mu’ Minin, while it was appropriate that you treated him the same way you treated others, send him to me immediately to punish him for his behavior.
Although when “Abu Shahma” came to Madinah, Hazrat Abd al-Rahman bin Awf ordered that, O Amir al-Mu’ Minin! He has been punished once; but he did not pay attention to his order, “Abu Shahma” begged and said: Father! I am sick, I will die if I am punished again. He did not pay attention again and according to the regulations, the limit was imposed on him, and “Abu Shahma”‘s illness worsened due to the same punishment, and he died after a month.
Some incidents from Hazrat Umar Farooq’s patrols
One night he was patrolling the city, suddenly he heard the sound of instruments and music singing from a house, he entered the house from the top of the wall, saw a man sitting next to a woman and placed wine in front of him, he said to him: O enemy of Islam! What did you think? does Allah ignore you despite these sins?
The man said: O Amir al-Mu’ Minin! Do not rush to punish me; because I have committed only one sin; But you have committed three sins!
First: That Allah has said: Do not seek others, but you did.
Second: Allah says: Do not enter someone’s house without permission, and you entered my house without permission.
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I forgive you, will you give up your sins? The man said: Yes, Amirul Momineen, I will never do this again.
