Imam al-A’zam Abu Hanifah (RA): The Role Model (part 22)

Part Two: His Jurist Students (Continued…)
    1. Imam Zufar (RA)
His rank in jurisprudence was considered superior to that of Imam Muhammad. However, because no written works by him have survived and his life was not documented in detail, his name is mentioned after the “Two Companions” (al-Sahibayn).
He was of Arab descent. At first, he made remarkable progress in the science of Hadith. Imam al-Nawawi, in Tahdhib al-Asma wa al-Lughat, explicitly states that he was known as Sahib al-Hadith. He later turned to jurisprudence and remained firmly devoted to it until the end of his life.
Yahya ibn Ma’in, the renowned authority in the science of al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil, said about him: “Zufar, the scholar of rational reasoning, is trustworthy and reliable.” Although some critics spoke against him, their criticisms were vague and lacked credibility.
He had exceptional mastery of analogical reasoning (qiyas) in legal rulings. Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) used to say about him, “He is the strongest of my companions in the use of analogy.” Waki’ ibn al-Jarrah, who was mentioned earlier, also benefited from Zufar’s knowledge. He also served as a judge and passed away in 158 AH.
    1. Qasim ibn Ma’n (RA)
He was a renowned scholar whose narrations were transmitted by the authors of the Six Canonical Hadith Collections (al-Sihah al-Sittah). Although he had attained a high level of excellence in Hadith and jurisprudence, he was unparalleled in the Arabic language and literature. Imam Muhammad would attend his gatherings to benefit from his knowledge.
The Caliph appointed him as the judge of Kufa. He accepted the position reluctantly and never received a salary for it.
Imam Abu Hanifa had a special affection for him, and Qasim was among those whom Imam Abu Hanifa would praise by saying, “You are a source of comfort to my heart and a means of relieving my sorrows.” He passed away in 175 AH.
    1. Asad ibn Amr (RA)
He was the first person entrusted with the responsibility of recording the scholarly works and legal discussions of Imam Abu Hanifa. He was a man of great distinction and high rank.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated a Hadith from him, and Yahya ibn Ma’in considered him trustworthy (thiqah).
Hilal al-Razi relates: “One day, Harun al-Rashid went to Makkah. After performing Tawaf, he sat inside the Ka’bah. All the courtiers and prominent members of Banu Hashim were standing, while only one person was sitting in the presence of Harun al-Rashid. I was surprised, so I asked about him and learned that he was Asad ibn Amr.”
    1. Ali ibn al-Mushir (RA)
He learned the science of Hadith from Imam al-A’mash and Hisham ibn Urwah. Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim narrated from him in their respective collections, and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal praised his excellence and virtue.
It was through him that Sufyan al-Thawri became acquainted with the writings of Imam Abu Hanifa. He served as the judge of Mosul and passed away in 189 AH.
    1. Afiyah ibn Yazid (RA)
He was a distinguished scholar whom Imam Abu Hanifa greatly respected. During the sessions in which legal issues were compiled, Imam Abu Hanifa would say about him: “Do not record the issue until Afiyah arrives.”
    1. Hibban (RA)
He was a prolific narrator, and numerous Hadiths narrated through him can be found in Sunan Ibn Majah. Imam Abu Hanifa praised the strength of his memory. He passed away in 172 AH.
    1. Mandal (RA)
He was the brother of Hibban. He narrated Hadith from Imam al-A’mash, Hisham ibn Urwah, Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, Isam al-Ahwal, and Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy upon them all).
He was a highly ascetic and pious man and passed away in 168 AH.
