Imam al-A’zam Abu Hanifa (RA) and the Science of Hadith
Objections Raised Against Imam Sahib (RA) Regarding Hadiths and Responses to Them (Continued…)
Reasons Why Imam Sahib (RA) Did Not Act Upon Certain Hadiths
Sometimes, a hadith has been narrated regarding an issue, yet Imam Sahib (RA) does not act upon it. At first glance, this may give the impression that he preferred analogy (Qiyas). However, in reality, there are several reasons for this. We will mention some of them:
  • The hadith may not have reached Imam Sahib (RA).
  • The hadith may have reached him, but it may not have been compatible with the principles he had established for the authenticity of hadith.
  • The hadith may have contained a hidden defect (Illah Khafiyyah) of which others were unaware.
  • There may have been another hadith that was stronger than it.
  • The hadith may have been abrogated according to Imam Sahib (RA).
  • The hadith may have been a solitary report (Khabar al-Wahid) that conflicted with the general principles of religion.
  • It may have been a solitary report that conflicted with the apparent meaning or general wording of the Quran.
  • It may have been a solitary report that conflicted with well-known hadith (Hadith Mashhur).
  • The narrator of the hadith may have acted contrary to the narration he himself had transmitted.
  • It may have been a solitary report concerning matters of widespread occurrence (Umum al-Balwa).
  • It may have been a solitary report that rejected a practice upon which the Companions (RA) and the Tabi’in (RA) had acted continuously through an established chain of transmission.
  • It may have been a solitary report that had already been criticized by hadith critics before Imam Sahib (RA).
  • A disagreement may have arisen among the Companions concerning an issue, with both sides citing hadiths as evidence. In such a case, Imam Sahib (RA), through his own independent reasoning (Ijtihad), preferred one side and did not act upon the second hadith.
In addition to these points, there are other reasons, the details of which have been discussed in extensive and comprehensive books.
Conclusion
By examining the lofty personality of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA), dozens of books could be written on each aspect of his life, including his scrupulousness, piety, worship, manner of dealing with people, and character.
Since, in the present era, a large part of the objections raised by those envious of Imam Sahib (RA) focus on his standing in the science of hadith, and efforts are being made to create doubts among the general public regarding his status in this field, I took this opportunity to write a brief article about Imam Sahib’s (RA) standing in hadith so that it may be beneficial to everyone in accordance with the needs of the present time.
May Allah Almighty make this work a means of attaining His pleasure and a source of benefit for others.
Ameen.
