In the previous section, the Qur’an presented the dialogue between Prophet Musa and Al-Khidr (AS) regarding their journey of learning and the fundamental condition upon which their companionship was based. According to this agreement, Musa (As) was not to question or object to any of Al-Khidr’s actions until Al-Khidr (AS) himself revealed the wisdom behind them. In this passage, however, the Qur’an recounts three remarkable incidents, each serving as a profound test of Musa’s patience, discernment, and submission to the divine wisdom of Allah.
1. Scuttling the Ship
Prophet Musa and Al-Khidr (AS) reached the seashore, where they encountered the owners of a ship. Recognizing Al-Khidr (AS), the sailors welcomed both of them aboard without charging any fare and treated them with generosity and respect. Yet, once the ship had sailed into open waters, Al-Khidr (AS) deliberately damaged part of it. From Musa’s perspective, this action appeared entirely inconsistent with justice and moral conduct. The owners of the ship had shown them kindness, and yet this act seemingly placed both the vessel and its passengers in danger. Unable to reconcile what he witnessed with the principles of justice, Musa (AS) exclaimed: «أَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ أَهْلَهَا لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا إِمْرًا» Translation: “Have you scuttled it to drown its people? You have certainly done a dreadful thing.”
Al-Khidr (AS), without expressing anger or harshness, simply reminded Musa of the condition they had agreed upon: «أَلَمْ أَقُلْ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا» Translation: “Did I not tell you that you would never be able to remain patient with me?”
Realizing his lapse, Musa (AS) responded with humility: «لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا نَسِيتُ وَلَا تُرْهِقْنِي مِنْ أَمْرِي عُسْرًا» Translation: “Do not hold me accountable for what I forgot, and do not make my task difficult for me.”
This was the first occasion on which Musa (AS) departed from his commitment—a lapse that he himself attributed to forgetfulness rather than deliberate disobedience. [2]
2. Killing the Young Boy
The two travelers then continued their journey until they encountered a young boy. Al-Khidr (AS) killed him, an action that was even more shocking to Musa (AS) than the previous incident. Outwardly, the boy had committed no offense, and according to the apparent rulings of the Sharī’ah, taking the life of an innocent person is among the gravest of sins. [3]
Consequently, Musa (AS) objected even more emphatically: «أَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا زَكِيَّةً بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا نُكْرًا» Translation: “Have you killed an innocent soul who had killed no one? You have certainly committed a terrible deed.”
Once again, Al-Khidr (AS) reminded him of their original agreement, this time in more direct terms: «أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا» Translation: “Did I not tell you that you would never be able to remain patient with me?”
Musa (AS), realizing he had broken his promise again, responded humbly: «إِنْ سَأَلْتُكَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْدَهَا فَلَا تُصَاحِبْنِي قَدْ بَلَغْتَ مِنْ لَدُنِّي عُذْرًا» Translation: “If I ask you about anything after this, do not keep me with you. I have given you enough reason.”
These words beautifully reflect Musa’s sincerity, humility, and unwavering commitment to honoring his covenant.
3. Restoring the Wall
After that, they reached a town and asked the locals for food and shelter. Even though they clearly needed help, the townspeople turned them away and offered no assistance. However, Al-Khidr (AS) spotted a wall that was about to fall down. Without asking for any payment or reward, he took the time to fix and strengthen it. This surprised Musa (AS), as it seemed only fair that they should be compensated for their work, especially given their urgent need for food. He then said: «لَوْ شِئْتَ لَاتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا» Translation: “If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.”
With this third question, the condition governing their companionship came to an end.
Al-Khidr (AS) then said: «هَذَا فِرَاقُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنِكَ سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ عَلَيْهِ صَبْرًا» Translation: “This is where we must part ways. I shall now explain to you the true meaning of those matters over which you were unable to remain patient.”
With these words, Al-Khidr (AS) brought their remarkable journey to a close while preparing to unveil the divine wisdom underlying the events that had perplexed Prophet Musa (AS).
Indeed, human beings often judge events solely by their outward appearance. Yet many occurrences conceal profound wisdom and divine purposes that lie beyond the limits of human perception and are known only to Allah, the Exalted.
