The Quran: A Miracle Beyond Time- A Study of Its Miraculous Nature (Part 57)
The Wonders of the Larynx, Senses, and Urinary System in the Creation of Man
Creation with Precise and Wise Measure
Allah the Exalted says in the Noble Qur’an: “إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ”(1) Translation: Indeed, we have created everything in precise measure.
This short verse expresses a profound truth: in creation, nothing is purposeless, uncalculated, or random. The universe — from the tiniest atomic particles to the vast galactic systems — is made with perfect precision, harmony, and purpose.
Allah the Exalted also says: “خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَوَّرَكُمْ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ”(2) Translation: He created the heavens and the earth in truth (not in vain; in their creation a precise and sound order has been employed, and it has a wise purpose and a right course), and He formed you and made your forms excellent.
The phrase “بِالْحَقِّ” (in truth) in these verses carries three deep meanings:
    1. Stability and permanence – unlike falsehood, which fades away, creation stands upon enduring reality.
    2. Purposefulness – everything is created with a wise goal, far removed from vanity or meaninglessness.
    3. Precision in measurement – every being is designed with exact, deliberate, and perfect proportion.
The Larynx: A Masterpiece of the Mechanism of Sound
The larynx, or voice box, is among the most astonishing structures in the human body. Physicians state that if the opening of the larynx were any wider than it is, a human being would no longer be able to produce sound; and if it were any narrower, breathing would become extremely difficult — perhaps even impossible.
Yet divine wisdom has fashioned this organ with such perfect balance that it allows both clear vocalization and ease of respiration simultaneously.
Allah the Exalted declares: “صُنْعَ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ” (3) Translation: This is the handiwork of Allah, who perfected all things He created.
Thresholds of the Senses: The Wise Boundaries of Perception
The All-Wise Creator has not only fashioned the organs with precision, but He has also set “thresholds” for our senses so that life remains bearable. If these thresholds were altered even slightly, our existence would turn into an unbearable torment:
Sight: If our eyes were even slightly more sensitive, we would see billions of microbes and living organisms in a single glass of water, and we would no longer be able to drink it. Even the soft face of a baby would appear to us as a rough surface full of cracks and bumps.
Hearing: If our ears were a little more sensitive, the internal sounds of our body — such as the movement of the digestive system — would prevent us from sleeping.
Touch: If the sense of touch were stronger, we would feel even the smallest static electric charge on our skin as painful and irritating.
Smell: Some animals have a sense of smell millions of times stronger than that of humans — but such intensity would make human life unbearable.
All this points to the wise design of the Creator, who has employed unmatched precision in the creation of human senses.
The Excretory System and the Wonders of the Kidneys
The Importance of the Kidneys and Gratitude for Their Blessing
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) used to say after leaving the restroom: «الحمد لله الذي أذهب عني الأذى وعافاني» (4) Translation: All praise is due to the one Allah, who has removed harm from me and granted me health.
The kidneys are two small yet vital organs, and their role in the human body is irreplaceable:
    • Around 1,800 liters of blood pass through the kidneys each day.
    • The network of filtering tubes (nephrons) in both kidneys measures about 60 kilometers in total length.
    • The kidneys have a filtration capacity 20 times greater than what the body actually needs.
    • Human blood passes through the kidneys 36 times a day.
    • If one kidney fails, the other can perform the function alone — a clear sign of divine mercy and wisdom.
The Precise Function of the Kidneys in Regulating Blood Composition
The kidneys purify the blood with astonishing accuracy:
    They return glucose, proteins, and essential minerals to the body;
    they expel waste materials such as urea, toxins, drugs, and excess salts;
    if blood sugar levels rise too high, glucose appears in urine (a sign of diabetes);
and if too much salt is consumed, the kidneys eliminate the excess.
When the kidneys fail, toxins accumulate in the body, memory declines, behavior changes, and eventually death occurs.
The Kidney as an Endocrine Gland
In addition to filtration, the kidneys also function as endocrine glands, secreting vital hormones that:
    • regulate blood pressure,
    • prevent anemia,
    • and maintain the body’s fluid balance.
Any dysfunction in the kidneys causes disturbances in blood pressure regulation and disrupts the balance of water and electrolytes in the body.
The Microscopic Structure and Complexity of the Kidney
Each kidney contains approximately one million filtering units (nephrons).
If these nephrons were placed end to end, their total length would reach about 160 kilometers.
The internal surface area of all nephrons together is over 8 cubic meters.
Despite each kidney weighing only about 70 grams, its performance and precision are beyond the full comprehension of the human brain.
Artificial dialysis machines, in comparison to natural kidneys, are vastly larger, more costly, and far less efficient.
Regulation of Salt Levels and the Connection Between the Kidneys, Brain, and Heart
The concentration of salt in the blood must remain within the narrow range of 7 to 8 parts per thousand. Any increase or decrease beyond this range can be fatal.
    When the salt level rises:
    1. The brain sends signals instructing the kidneys to stop releasing water.
    2. The heart secretes a hormone that triggers an intense feeling of thirst.
    3. When water is consumed, the excess salt dissolves and the kidneys excrete it along with the surplus water.
This entire complex process occurs automatically, with perfect precision and coordination — and the human being remains entirely unaware of it.
The bladder is not merely a storage container for urine — it is an intelligent system with a remarkably complex neural network:
    • As it fills, it sends signals to the spinal cord.
    • The spinal cord, in turn, contracts the bladder muscles and relaxes the outlet.
    • However, the actual execution of urination depends on the brain’s approval, ensuring that release occurs at an appropriate time and place.
But if the bladder becomes excessively full, risking urine reflux into the kidneys and possible blood poisoning, the spinal cord bypasses the brain’s control and issues an automatic command to release urine — a mechanism designed to preserve human life.
The bladder can hold more than 1.5 liters of urine, allowing a person to continue normal activity for hours without discomfort or harm.
A Spiritual Reflection on Divine Design
In conclusion, from the tiny larynx to the delicate kidneys and the intelligent bladder, every part of the human body is a masterpiece of divine knowledge, power, and wisdom.
These organs work unceasingly, precisely, and without complaint, while humans often remain unaware of their existence.
The Holy Qur’an says: «وَفِي أَنفُسِكُمْ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ» (5) Translation: And (there are signs) within your own selves — do you not then see?
And also: «صُنْعَ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ. » (6)  Translation: This is the handiwork of God, who has made everything firm, precise, and perfectly ordered.
Every time we breathe, speak, drink water, or expel waste from our bodies, we are in fact witnessing living signs of God’s power.
Recognizing these signs not only strengthens our faith but also calls us toward greater gratitude and deeper worship.
The larynx, the senses, the kidneys, and the bladder are not merely bodily organs — they are “living books of divine knowledge” placed within us.
Reflecting upon them opens a gateway to knowing the Almighty, and the more we learn about these systems, the more our humility and gratitude toward their Creator increase.
«أتحسبُ أنك جرمٌ صغیرٌ … وفیك انطوى العالم الأكبرُ» Translation: Do you think you are a small being — while the vast universe is contained within you?
All praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds, for the blessings that flow ceaselessly within us — granting us life, balance, awareness, and humanity. (7)
