The Role of Women in Society (Part 7)
Confidentiality in Preserving Life
Keeping life’s secrets is one of the important recommendations of the Glorious Qur’an for righteous and faithful men and women. A common issue today is the tendency of many people to disclose private matters, especially regarding a woman’s life and her relationship with her husband. If a woman confides in her husband, or vice versa, these secrets must not be exposed. As Allah the Exalted clearly states in the Qur’an: “هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ” Translation: “They are garments for you, and you are garments for them.”
From this verse, we can understand that Allah likens husband and wife to garments for each other—symbolizing closeness, protection, and concealment—so they should not reveal each other’s secrets to others. Disclosing such matters goes against the Word of Allah. However, due to weakness, lack of dignity, or honor, some people share their spouse’s secrets with friends or relatives. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) strongly forbade such behavior and described those who do it as dishonorable.
Chastity and Trustworthiness in the Absence of the Husband
Chastity and trustworthiness in the absence of one’s spouse are among the key factors for maintaining a strong and lasting marital relationship. If either spouse engages in betrayal or impure behavior behind the other’s back—or even creates suspicion of such conduct—it weakens the warmth of the family bond and may even lead to its collapse. Allah praises exemplary and righteous women in the Qur’an by highlighting this quality: “فَالصَّالِحَاتُ قَانِتَاتٌ حَافِظَاتٌ لِلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللهُ” Translation: “So righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard.”
Individual Traits of Righteous Women from the Qur’anic Perspective
Understanding the individual qualities of righteous women from the Qur’an completes the picture of what an ideal woman is according to Islamic teachings. In addition to social and familial roles, righteous women should also possess personal virtues. Below are some of the most important traits as described in the Qur’an:
Faith and Righteous Deeds
Faith combined with righteous actions is an inseparable aspect of religious commitment and the most significant trait of exemplary women. The Holy Qur’an makes it clear that faith, coupled with good deeds, is the key to success and happiness in this life and the Hereafter: “مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَى وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْرَهُم بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ” Translation: “Whoever does good deeds, whether male or female, and is a believer, we will surely grant them a good life and reward them according to the best of their deeds.”
“وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ مِن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَى وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُوْلَئكَ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ نَقِيرًا” Translation: “And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer—those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged [even as much as] the speck on a date seed.”
Obedience to Allah and His Messenger
Unquestioning obedience to Allah and His Messenger is another quality of righteous and exemplary women. Many verses affirm this trait: “وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَن يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ وَمَن يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا مُّبِينًا” Translation: “It is not for a believing man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly gone far astray.”
Piety (Taqwa)
From the Qur’anic perspective, the ideal woman is one who is God-conscious (muttaqiya) and practices Taqwa in all aspects of her life—personal, family, and societal. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the lofty status of Taqwa: “يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ” Translation: “O mankind! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-fearing. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.”
Truthfulness
Truthfulness is one of the prominent characteristics of righteous women according to the Holy Qur’an. Translation: “Indeed, Muslim men and Muslim women, believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, patient men and patient women, humble men and humble women, charitable men and charitable women, fasting men and fasting women, men who guard their private parts and women who do so, and men who remember God often and women who do so – for them God has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.”
Modesty and Proper Dress (Hijab)
Another key trait of a righteous woman in Islamic teachings is modesty, which includes wearing proper clothing (hijab). The principle of hijab—regardless of its details—is a consistent and established practice from the earliest days of Islam until now. All scholars and jurists across Islamic sects have agreed upon this matter, and no reputable scholar has ever denied its obligation.
Guarding the Gaze
Righteous and exemplary women are also described as those who guard their eyes from lustful or inappropriate looks. In other words, staring at non-mahram individuals with desire is strictly forbidden for believing men and women alike.
