The Significance and Esteemed Position of Youth in Society (Part Two)
The Distinctive Role of Conscious and Dedicated Youth in History
Believing youth, with their firm faith in Allah Almighty, are characterized by qualities that play a decisive role in society. Through their obedience to Allah’s commands and their avoidance of His prohibitions, they exemplify values that are essential for societal progress.
A young man’s obedience and worship, as well as his adherence to religion, hold great significance because he is at the peak of his physical and sexual strength, making him highly sensitive and susceptible to various environmental factors and stimuli. Despite the presence of deviant causes and motivations, when a young Muslim controls his rebellious instincts and channels his physical powers and talents in a healthy and Islamic direction, he becomes worthy of the endless mercy and grace of Allah Almighty.
In religious sources, like the Quran and Sunnah, we learn about the Companions of the Kahf, who, akin to mystics and seekers of monotheism, withdrew to the desert to declare their innocence from the polytheistic beliefs of their people. In their quest for guidance and success, they endured various hardships; yet they never submitted to the oppressive, polytheistic tyrant. As Allah the Almighty states: “نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَأَهُم بِالْحَقِّ إِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ آمَنُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنَاهُمْ هُدًى” Translation: “We restate to you their story in truth (without any reduction). They were young people who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in (certainty) and guidance.”
These young individuals, through their sincere belief in their Lord, chose to exchange the comforts of life for the difficulties associated with their worries. They chose the path of guidance and monotheism, facing a ruling system that sought to eliminate them. However, by the will of Allah Almighty, they ultimately achieved the blessing of guidance and special mercy, finding victory in both this world and the Hereafter.
Similarly, when Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood against the idols and eliminated all manifestations of polytheism, he faced a people who would soon recognize him. “قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ” Translation: “We have certainly heard that a young man called Ibrahim used to mention the idols in an ugly way.” Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was a brave individual who challenged the deviant religion of his people. They had no response to his strong arguments and sound logic except to resort to force.
In the blessed biography of the Prophet (peace be upon him), it is noted that near the end of his life, he appointed a young man named Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead a large army in Syria—an army that included esteemed companions like Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). The significance of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) decision can be understood through reflection; even after his passing, Islam would remain strong and vibrant through the dedication of youth.
History demonstrates that calls for reform have often been initiated by young people, who have consistently been at the forefront of struggles for justice. Therefore, considering the critical and effective role of youth in Islamic society, many dedicated preachers and writers have focused their efforts on these young individuals. Muslim scholars emphasize the importance of addressing youth issues as a top priority, calling for their enthusiasm and active participation. Guiding and directing youth to fulfill Islamic missions is essential since youth are the foundation of society, and the fate of a nation depends on them.
