Allama Sayyed Abul Hasan Nadwi ‘may Allah have mercy on him’ (Part 46)
A great man in the field of Da’wah (invitation) and reformation
A Heartfelt letter
In one of his heartfelt letters to his dear and close friend, Maulana Masoud Alam Nadwi, who was in Iraq, Allama Nadwi expresses his profound pain regarding the Islamic Ummah. The letter is filled with deep sorrow and benevolence. He writes:
“Don’t give up any effort to cultivate religion in the hearts of people. Complete the proof. Make night and day one; burn your heart, grant impatience to your body, liquefy the blood of the liver, as the Tigris and the Euphrates mourn their lack of capacity. Seize each of them by the collar and say: O distraught deer of the Arabian desert! O the honor of the world! O desire of Abraham and Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him! Where are you lost? Is this the result of the midnight prayers and dawn sighs of Sayyiduna Omar, may Allah bless him and grant him peace? Is it the blood of the martyr Muthni bin Haritha, the breaking of bones and the trampling of Abu Ubaid Thaqafi, the standard-bearer of Saad bin Abi Waqqas? Is it the burning of the liver, the shedding of tears, and the great effect of the speeches of Ali bin Abi Talib? Is it the thirst of the Prophet, the reputation of the martyrs, the devaluation of the blood of the Prophet’s family, the intellectual exploration of Abu Hanifah, the punishment for the crime of love by Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, the support of Ibn Juzi from Sunnah, and the pain of Abdul Qadir Jilani? Is this all that you are—the standard bearer of the imams of misguidance and the dust of its path? In this Iraqi cemetery, another sound has risen, reviving the passion of resurrection. It is ugly and unusual for a hypocrite to pray and a true Muslim to be buried under the soil of Batha.”
It is mentioned in the collection of hadiths about the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that sometimes during prayer, a sound like a boiling pot would come from his chest. Likewise, in this era, Allah Almighty has inspired one of the members of the Ummah of the Arab Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, with a part of this boiling sea and roaring flood within them. Just as he felt pain and compassion for the Ummah, like the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Bilal Abdulhai Hassani Nadwi writes:
“One of the prominent characteristics of Mawlana was his pain and concern for the Ummah, compassion, and tears—an inheritance from his predecessors, further amplified by his meeting with Hazrat Mawlana Muhammad Ilyas. Hazrat Maulana’s whole life was a manifestation of this pain and concern. Being aware of the situation in the Islamic world and the plans of Islam’s enemies transformed his nature and mood. He spent day and night contemplating how to reform the Ummah for immediate change. For this, he planned and endeavored with his speeches and writings. He often pleaded and prayed in the privacy of the night before his Lord.
At a time when the enemies of Islam, through their corrupt propaganda targeting all segments of the Muslim Ummah—young and old, men and women—are continuously plotting, the Islamic scholars and the educated members of the Muhammadian Ummah, peace and blessings be upon him, sit idle, merely witnesses to these shocking and horrific scenes. This is a great betrayal and a crime against religion, the nation, and Islamic society. Without a doubt, if this situation continues, the Islamic world will soon fall into the abyss of humiliation.
The valuable and revitalizing contributions of Hazrat Allama Nadwi during this critical period of our times are certainly commendable, and the wounded and troubled Islamic society is still waiting for individuals who, like Umar Farooq, will instill a sense of responsibility and pain in the lives of the Ummah. Or like Hazrat Umar bin Abdulaziz, who took steps to revive Islamic laws and revive the Prophetic Sunnah, peace be upon him, or like Hassan Basri, who removed the veil of ignorance from the ears of Muslims with the spear of painful words to awaken the dormant and neglected society.
Yes! Today, Islamic society needs individuals who will restore its essence and guide those who have lost their way back to the true path of faith and Islam. Like the thinker of Islam, Hazrat Allama Sayyed Abul Hassan Ali Nadwi, with his restlessness and dissatisfaction, felt the ills of society in a manner that inspires action; he sought to apply soothing remedies.
This truth introduces a person to humanity and provides him with meaning. This is the path that Allah Almighty will lead them along to the highest levels of guidance and support, as it has been said regarding the attributes of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that the best among people is the one whose counsel and kindness are the most comprehensive.”
