Social Space and Observing Marital Rights (Part Seven)
Disclosure of Marital Secrets Leads to Social Deviations
Undoubtedly, human life has interested whose neglect can lead to many problems. Family and married life are no exception to this rule; in married life, numerous important factors can enhance the quality of life together. Conversely, failing to observe these factors can result in significant challenges. One of these critical factors in married life is the non-disclosure of marital secrets. The revelation of such secrets can lead to moral deviations that, according to the principle of “blocking the means”—that is, shutting down the paths to corruption—can be deemed prohibited.
Given that secrets can be classified into two types: one’s own secrets and the secrets of others and understanding that revealing either type can cause corruption and challenges, we will examine each category separately.
1.5. Negative Consequences of Revealing One’s Own Secrets
Human secrets fall into two general categories: those indicating a person’s happiness and well-being or those revealing their misfortune and shortcomings. In both instances, uncovering such secrets can lead to the following problems:
a) Causes Ridicule from Others and Dissatisfaction from the Spouse
In the early stages of their family life, young couples, often unintentionally and out of negligence or immaturity, disclose matters related to their marital life to relatives and close friends. This might not pose a significant issue initially; but as time goes on, changes in external relationships and friendships may turn this into a problem. Such disclosures can result in ridicule and blame from others or provoke sensitivities in the spouse, ultimately leading to family disputes and opening the door for interference from relatives in minor couple issues—interference that may ignite fires of conflict.
b) Causes Loss of Social Status
Revealing secrets, especially marital ones, significantly diminishes individuals’ social value. People naturally tend to admire those who are discreet and avoid those who disclose secrets. By revealing secrets, individuals not only harm their own credibility but also undermine their social position.
c) Wasting Time and Neglecting Family Priorities
Another adverse outcome of disclosing marital secrets is the forfeiture of valuable opportunities for family life. Undoubtedly, couples share responsibilities, such as raising children and managing daily family duties. Unfortunately, many couples spend extensive time exchanging trivial and sometimes detrimental information. This not only has a negative impact on familial progress but also results in wasted time and a disregard for life priorities.
d) Causes Jealousy in Others
While marital secrets can encompass challenges, they often pertain to the more joyous aspects of life. Some individuals believe that sharing their private moments of happiness with others is harmless; however, doing so may stir feelings of jealousy and envy in others, creating a fertile ground for discontent.
e) A Factor in Provoking Problems in the Lives of Others
Human life is typically characterized by fluctuations, and it cannot be assumed that all individuals are having equally positive or negative relationships simultaneously. For example, couples in a happy relationship may feel inclined to share their joyful experiences with their friends. However, some listeners may be facing family difficulties; upon hearing about others’ happiness, they might compare their circumstances unfavorably, inadvertently escalating their own problems.
