A Study on the Role of the Media and Its Effects on the Identity of Muslims (Part 57)
Consequences of Cultural Invasion
4. Disruption of the Foundation of the Family:
The family institution is considered a small society and plays an important role in the proper upbringing of children and the transmission of a value-based culture, as well as in strengthening the foundations of a religious lifestyle. Therefore, the strength of this nuclear institution, the warmth and intimacy of its center, and the value-based behaviors within it play a significant role in individual and social happiness. What keeps the family center warm and strong is love and affection, along with adherence to true divine values. If any of these important elements are damaged, the family institution will falter or disintegrate.
The Holy Qur’an says: «وَ مِنْ آياته أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْواجاً لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَىها وَ جَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُون»; “And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may find tranquility in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. In that are signs for a people who reflect.” (Ar-Rum: 21)
One of the goals of cultural invaders, in their attempt to change the culture of society and replace it with their own, is to weaken, destabilize, or disintegrate the vital institution of the family. Hostile media contribute to this by altering true religion and replacing it with anti-religious practices such as nudity, consumerism, fashion, and luxury. Users may adopt these anti-values out of a desire not to feel left behind, often implementing them in their lives unconsciously. Weakening family values and promoting anti-values causes serious damage to the relationship between spouses.
Furthermore, cultural invaders, by producing and broadcasting pornographic and vulgar films in the media sphere, seek to model problematic sexual behaviors at the societal level. This modeling can lead to cognitive and behavioral errors among spouses, especially men. Over time, many individuals who watch such films develop sexual misconceptions and unrealistic expectations regarding sexual relationships. These films degrade the view of women to that of mere sexual commodities, neglecting their spiritual and personal qualities. Additionally, exposure to such material diminishes affection between spouses, rendering their sexual relations less meaningful. In extreme cases, a person addicted to watching these films may develop attractions outside their marriage, undermining the institution of marriage itself. Consequently, the once warm family unit becomes cold, and intimacy fades away. These are some of the most significant unfortunate consequences of cultural invasion.
