Twenty Discourses, Twenty Radiant Faces (Part 15)
Scholars’ Views on Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him:
Zarkali says about him: “He is a pillar of Islam.”
Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani says about him: “Ibn al-Qayyim was very strong-hearted and courageous, had extensive knowledge and wisdom, and was very familiar with the issues of dispute and the schools and opinions of the predecessors.”
Allama Ibn Rajab Hanbali says: “I did not find anyone more knowledgeable than him in his time, and no one could reach his level in the field of knowledge of the meanings of the Quran and the Sunnah and the truths of faith. Although he was not infallible, I had never seen anyone like him.”
Qazi Burhan al-Din Zari says: “I did not find anyone more knowledgeable than him under the sky of his time.”
Hafiz Imad al-Din Ibn Kasir says: “He was busy studying and researching day and night. His prayers and recitations were many, well-mannered and loving, and there was no trace of malice or jealousy in him.”
Ibn Kasir also says: “I do not know of anyone in this era who was as devoted to worship as he was. He had a special way of performing prayers, and his recitations, bowing, and prostrations were very long. Although he was sometimes criticized by his friends for his long prayers, he did not change his method. May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him!”
Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali says: “Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah was a commentator on the Quran, a grammarian, a theorist, and a theorist, and he was a man of creativity and innovation in Islamic sciences. He was unrivaled in the interpretation of the Quran, and he was the authority and the final word in the principles of religious beliefs. He had an indescribable genius in understanding and interpreting the correct hadiths and inferring from them accurately. He was unparalleled in jurisprudence and the principles of jurisprudence, and he was superior in Arabic language and literature, theology, and many other sciences. He was unparalleled in the science of conduct and mysticism.”
Mulla Ali Qari Hanafi says: “Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Qayyim are among the great Sunnis, and they are the guardians of the saints of Allah.”
Death of Allama Ibn Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him)
One of the predecessors said: “When a scholar dies, it is as if he has not died, but rather I have lost an important part of my body.”
Imam Zarkali says: “Allama Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawzi (may Allah have mercy on him) passed away on Thursday night, 13 Rajab 751 AH, at the age of sixty, and hastened to the eternal home; but he made his name immortal in the world forever. As long as a Muslim lives and breathes on this earth, Ibn al-Qayyim’s name will always be remembered alongside his teacher, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, and other scholars.”
The next day, after the noon prayer, the Umayyad Grand Mosque in Damascus was filled with devotees who had come to pray for someone who had spent his years serving Allah’s people. After the Umayyad Mosque, prayers were offered for him in the Jarrah Mosque.
His student Ibn Kasir says: “A large crowd, including judges and righteous elders, common people and private individuals, attended his funeral, and people carried his blessed body with great difficulty due to the heavy crowd.”
He was buried in Damascus, in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, next to his venerable father. His grave is famous to this day and is located on the left side of the cemetery as you enter from the new gate.
May Allah have mercy on him and grant him a place of peace in his paradise and gather him with the prophets and the righteous. Amen.
