The Role of Wives According to Quranic Verses and Prophetic Hadiths
This part explores the esteemed position of wives in Islam as emphasized through Quranic verses and prophetic teachings. Translation: “And one of the signs (of Allah’s power and majesty) is that He created for you wives from among yourselves, so that you may find peace and comfort with them. He placed between you love and affection, establishing a bond that fosters prosperity and character development. These are signs for those who reflect on the world and Allah’s creations.”
Dr. Yusuf Qarzawi, may Allah have mercy on him, states: “Allah has given dignity to women as human beings because He has assigned them full responsibilities and obligations similar to those of men, making them worthy of reward.” The first obligation for both man and woman were the same. Allah addressed mankind through Adam: «وقلنا یا آدم اسکن أنت وزوجک الجنة وکلا منها رغدا حیث شئتما ولا تقربا هذه الشجرة فتکونا من الظالمین» Translation: “And We said: O Adam, you and your wife should settle in Paradise and eat its [fruits] in abundance wherever you want, and do not approach this tree because you will be among the wrongdoers.”
The wife often leaves behind a legacy that reflects her husband’s success. She supports him by addressing his weaknesses with care, managing household duties so he remains worry-free, and sometimes assists with financial challenges. In raising her children, she exerts considerable effort to avoid burdening her husband, and when he falls ill, she tends to him with great diligence and compassion.
It is often said that behind every successful man, there is a woman playing a key role. This saying reflects many experiences, including the time when Allah created Eve, fulfilling Adam’s need for companionship. Unfortunately, many men fail to recognize the true value and greatness of women, sometimes treating them merely as servants.
In Islam, the role of the wife is elevated beyond mere domestic duties; she is an integral partner, contributing significantly to her husband’s success and the family’s well-being. Recognizing this contribution is essential for fostering mutual respect and appreciation within the marital relationship.
