A Review of the Compilation and Authenticity of Hadith (Part 7)
Quranic Evidence for the Authenticity of Hadith
3. After the death of the Prophet (peace be upon him), a dispute arose regarding his burial, which was resolved based on the Prophetic Hadith. In Tarikh al-Kamil (3/225) and other historical sources, it is mentioned that when this dispute arose, Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: ‘Every Prophet is buried in the place where he died.'” Upon hearing this Hadith, the dispute was settled, and by the unanimous opinion of the Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them), the Prophet (peace be upon him) was buried in the sacred place where he had passed away.
4. One of the important events in the history of Islam is the collection of the Quran. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) suggested to Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Quran be compiled into one book and preserved in a single Mushaf between two covers. Initially, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) repeatedly said: “How can I do something that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has not done?” Eventually, Hazrat Abu Bakr was reassured, and he summoned Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and entrusted him with the important task of collecting the Quran. At first, Zaid bin Sabit (may Allah be pleased with him) echoed the same concern, stating: “How can you do something that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has not done?”
However, after some time, he too became confident, and Allah reassured his heart, declaring his readiness for this significant responsibility. The purpose of recounting these events is to illustrate that the honorable Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) consistently strove to seek and adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet before undertaking any task, ensuring that if the ruling was not evident in the Quran, they would refer to the Sunnah for guidance.
5. In the Muwatta of Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), it is mentioned that a person whose grandmother passed away came to Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask about her inheritance. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: “There is no right for you in the Book of Allah, and I do not see any right for you in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Go now, and I will consult the Muslims about this matter later.” He then asked the Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) about this issue. Hazrat Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) recalled: “I was present when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) determined the inheritance of grandparents as one-sixth.” Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: “Was anyone else with you?” Mughirah replied: “Yes, Muhammad bin Muslimah Al-Ansari was also with me.” After confirmation of this testimony, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) granted one-sixth of the inheritance to that woman.
6. After the Islamic government expanded to include the land of Persia, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was uncertain whether the Jizya should be collected from the Zoroastrians of Iran, as the Quran specifically mentioned the collection of Jizya from the People of the Book—the Jews and Christians. However, Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) testified that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had collected Jizya from the Zoroastrians of the “Hijr.” Following this confirmation, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) proceeded to collect the Jizya from them as well.
