    Mu’tazila (Part 70)
The Story of Asif bin Barkhiyya
Almighty Allah, regarding the companion of Solomon (peace be upon him) who brought the throne of Bilqis in the blink of an eye, says: «قال الذي عنده علم من الكتاب أنا آتيك به قبل أن يرتد إليك طرفك فلمّا رآه مستقرا عنده قال هذا من فضل ربي ليبلوني ءأشكر أم أكفر ومن شكر فإنما يشكر لنفسه ومن كفر فإن ربي غني كريم».
Translation: “The one who had knowledge from the [divine] book said: ‘I will bring it to you before you can blink.’ And when he found it established before him, he said: ‘This is a favor from my Lord to test me whether I give thanks or act ungratefully. And whoever gives thanks, he only gives thanks for his own good, and whoever is ungrateful should know that my Lord is Self-Sufficient and Generous.'”
In the book *Sharh Aqaa’id*, this story is discussed as follows: Sometimes, miracles manifest in ways that defy normal patterns—such as a saint covering a long distance in a very short time. An example is the companion of Solomon (peace be upon him), identified by most sources as Asif bin Barkhiyya, who brought the throne of Bilqis to Solomon in the blink of an eye, despite the vast distance.
Allama Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani, in his commentary *Ma’ariful Qur’an*, writes: “In this incident, if the narration is authentic that the act was carried out by Asif bin Barkhiyya, a companion of Solomon (peace be upon him), then it was his miracle. Since the virtues of every saint are derived from the perfections of their prophet, any miracle performed by saints is ultimately considered part of the miracles of the prophet they follow.”
    Prophetic Hadiths
It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that his aunt Rabi’ broke the front teeth of a young girl. The girl refused to forgive her and rejected compensation, demanding only retribution. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that retribution be carried out. At this point, Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Messenger of Allah! Will Rabi’s front teeth be broken? By Allah, who has sent you with the truth, her teeth will not be broken.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “O Anas, the decree of Allah’s Book is retribution.” Eventually, the girl’s family forgave Rabi’. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said: «إن من عباد الله من لو أقسم علی الله لأبره»
Translation: Among the servants of Allah, the Exalted, there are those who, when they swear an oath to Allah, He fulfills their oath.
Qadi Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him) comments: “This hadith affirms the validity of the Karamat (miracles) of the Awliya. “
The Hadith of the Cave Ashab al-Ghar: This is detailed hadith narrated in *Sahih al-Bukhari*. Three men were trapped in a cave when a large rock blocked its entrance. Each of them recalled a righteous deed and prayed for Allah’s help. Allah accepted their prayers and saved them by moving the rock.
The Hadith of the Boy, the Monk, and the Sorcerer: This is the story of a boy who learned from both a monk and a sorcerer. Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates this detailed story in his book.
In the book *Tatrees Riyadh al-Saliheen*, after mentioning these hadiths, it is stated: “There are numerous hadiths regarding [miracles], each narrated in its respective context, including the hadith of the boy who went to the monk and the sorcerer, the hadith of Juraij, and the hadith of the Ashab al-Ghar where a large rock blocked the cave entrance.”
