The Importance of Security in Islam (Part 16)
Factors Affecting Social Security
1. The Connection Between Social Security and Political Security: Social security is a complex and multifaceted issue and is not separate from other dimensions of security, including political, economic, and social security. It cannot be said that social security is superior to political security, or vice versa. In other words, people’s belief and trust help these categories to develop a partnership, empathy, and convergence with the government. If the government experiences a situation in which it lacks the people’s participation, social security will undoubtedly be at risk.
Political security refers to a situation in which political order, strength, and stability are maintained in a society, providing a sense of security for individuals and communities. Political security encompasses maintaining the rights and freedoms of citizens, upholding public order, creating justice, and preventing threats from various internal and external forces or factors.
2. The Police and Their Role in Social Security: The prevailing view in society is that the responsibility for social security rests with the police. However, social security belongs to the people and is meant for the people, and the government must manage and plan accordingly. It can even be said that the police are a secondary factor in providing security, while the primary factor is the people themselves. The police actually complement the presence and participation of the community in creating social security.
3. Encouraging People’s Participation: One of the most effective factors in establishing security is the role of people’s participation. The issue of social security, as an important social concern, is entirely dependent on the involvement of the public. The government must take responsibility for managing and planning the development of social security and cannot function as the sole agent of this initiative.
To improve social security, this goal can be achieved by promoting social participation within the community. Among the challenges that must be addressed to this end are cultural, educational, and psychological issues.
One of the most significant ways to foster social security is through the participation of community members in establishing order and security, as well as cooperation with the government. When the nation and the government are aligned and work together, helping each other in all fields and maintaining their cohesion and unity, that society will soon become exemplary—not only in the security sector but in all dimensions and aspects. Unity and cohesion are the foundations for the security and peace of society and contribute to its growth, development, excellence, and progress.
How beautifully Allah the Almighty says about unity and cohesion, «وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا» Translation: (“And hold fast to the rope of Allah all of you (unite together), and do not scatter.”) This is the command of Allah the Wise. The directive of the Blessed and Exalted is never devoid of wisdom.
Thus, it becomes clear that the role of each member of society and their participation in fostering personal and social security is vital. Governments should strive to prevent a lack of public participation by providing suitable job opportunities and good professions. In this regard, citizens should also cooperate with the government. Governments that seek security and sustainability must engage the public in a comprehensive capacity and refrain from infringing upon their rights. If the populace is oppressed and the government attempts to establish security through force and coercion, it will never achieve its objectives and will incur significant costs through futile efforts.
