Imam Abu Hanifa, May Allah Mercy be Upon him: A Beacon of Knowledge in the Realm of Scholars and Hadith Masters (Part 9)
Imam’s Writings in the Science of Hadith
Abul Moayed Moafaq al-Din Makki (born in 484 and died in 568 AH) writes: “Imam Muhammad bin Shojah, may Allah have mercy on him (died in 266 AH), wrote: ‘There are nearly seventy thousand hadiths in the writings of Imam Abu Hanifah, may Allah have mercy on him.'”
It should be mentioned that the number of seventy thousand hadiths is only a small portion of the hadiths that Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) listened to, collected, and memorized from his teachers. The total number of hadiths he heard is very large; as Imam Hafez Zakaria bin Yahya Ansari, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates from Yahya bin Nasr Hajib (died 215 AH) that he heard Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, say: “I have collected boxes of hadiths; but I only narrate those hadiths that are beneficial to the people.” It is mentioned elsewhere that Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) had a house full of hadith books.
