The Importance of Security in Islam (Part 12)
    Factors for Creating Personal Security
Indeed, every person in society is like the foundation of that society. The path and future of a society depend on the journey and destiny of its people. Perhaps only the rare figures in history, with their high levels of education and perfection, have been able to change the course of history and provide valuable services in various fields to their communities. As active and essential elements of their society, these individuals have established good and ideal societies filled with security, peace, civilization, progress, and development.
However, throughout history, there have also been those who have done the complete opposite. They have acted through their deeds, traits, actions, deviant thoughts, and boundless evil desires, resulting in the destruction of societies and nations, leading to prolonged wars affecting their own nation and humanity at large. Therefore, all educators and elders should strive to ensure that every member of society is well-educated and becomes a perfect human being. Below are the factors that create individual security in society.
    1. Human Training: Training means to develop the latent talents within human existence and transform them from potential to actual. These talents can pertain to either material or spiritual fields, enabling a person to achieve divine perfection through them.
    2. Acquiring the Attribute of Piety and Rebuilding the Soul: Obtaining piety and internalizing this attribute in a way that it becomes a consistent and powerful emotional force within a person. Since the hearts of pious individuals, those who have reformed their souls and embody piety, are connected to Allah Almighty, they will never dare to act in ways that jeopardize the security of the people and the region. They view such actions as great sins and therefore refrain from them. The pious comprehend the significance of obeying Allah Almighty and following His commands, which inspires them to be obedient. Conversely, they are also aware of the seriousness of what Allah has forbidden, which motivates them to shy away from sin and disobedience.
How beautifully Allah (S.W.T) articulates: “ذَلِكَ وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوب” Translation: “And whoever esteems Allah’s rites as great, that [honoring is due to] the piety of the hearts.”
    3. Mental Peace and Stability: It is essential for a person to carefully consider any action before taking it, in order to achieve peace, stability, and intellectual security. When an individual attains mental peace and certainty, they tend to avoid actions that disturb societal security, as such actions contradict human nature.
    4. Acquiring Science and Knowledge: The religion of Islam places special emphasis on acquiring knowledge, to an extent unmatched by anything else. When the members of a society are knowledgeable, it is highly unlikely that they will engage in the actions typically associated with ignorance. As a result, society can be spared from numerous calamities and temptations, ultimately restoring security, peace, and comfort to the community.
    5. Physical Health: Just as a person needs spiritual and mental security, they also require physical security. A healthy body enables one to utilize the divine talents and gifts inherent in human existence effectively. Thus, the body is regarded as a trust, and all its rights and responsibilities must be upheld.
Today, the impacts of poor physical health on regional security are evident and palpable. Young people suffering from the scourge of addiction neither show pity for themselves nor for their families or communities. Sometimes news from such individuals seems incredible to those who have not lived in similar environments. Overall, physical, mental, and psychological health significantly affect societal security.
For this reason, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said in a hadith: “Each of you, who enjoys mental peace (life) and physical health, and whose daily food is found with him, is as if he has the whole world.”
Although some authors have classified security into two categories, as previously stated, other scholars and writers have identified several types, which we will discuss below. In his book “Al-Aman Fi Qur’an and Sunnah,” Sheikh Khaled Nomani mentions twelve forms of security, which we will briefly explain here:
    1. Individual Security: The significance of individual security is not inferior to social security, although social security can depend on individual security, both positively and negatively. Until individual security is realized, social security and other forms of security cannot be fully established. Individual security serves as the foundation for society and other forms of security. In this context, the importance and necessity of individual security for society become clear.
Every member of society needs protection for their property, life, reputation, and honor. This is something the Islamic religion has taken responsibility for through comprehensive and accurate planning in both personal and social spheres. Additionally, Islam provides systematic and coherent programs for safeguarding individual rights, ensuring people can enjoy safety, security, and peace, as well as access to welfare and provisions for material and spiritual development.
Islam prescribes optimal methods and solutions to safeguard each person’s life, property, honor, and dignity by respecting the diverse facets of their lives. For this reason, individual security can be categorized into several types:
    – Safety of soul and life
    – Security of property and real estate
    – Security of honor and human dignity
    – Security of one’s personality and status
In the upcoming sections, we will endeavor to elaborate on each of these types.
