Criteria for Distinguishing Sunnah and Bid’ah (part 11)
Effects of innovation:
Innovation has destructive and deadly effects and consequences for the individual and the society, some of which we will list:
Innovation is blasphemous: Hazrat Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from the Holy Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that: “the Day of Judgment will not be established until my nation imitates past nations step by step. The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you mean the Persians and Romans of the past nations? He said: Is there anyone else besides them?
Dislike of the Sunnah and the followers of the Sunnah by the innovators: this is a sign of the deterioration of the innovation. Imam Ismail bin Abdurrahman Sabuni said: “The signs of innovation are obvious among the Bedouins, and the most obvious of them is the intensity of their enmity with the bearers of hadiths and their contempt.
Attributing words to Allah without knowledge: It is understood from the state of innovators that they tell the most lies about Allah and His Messenger. Allah has warned against saying such words:
«وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ، لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ، ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ»
“If the Prophet had falsely covered some of his words to us, we would have grabbed his right hand, then we would have torn his heart.
The Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has warned against attributing lies to himself and has promised the doer of it a painful punishment: “Whoever deliberately refer lies to me, prepare his place in hell.
Non-acceptance of the testimony and narration of the innovator: Scholars, such as the Hadith Masters, jurists, and Osuli’in, agree that the narration of the innovator who has been given a fatwa to be an infidel is not accepted. And an innovator who is not called an infidel, there is a difference in the acceptance of his narration, but Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said that his narration is acceptable on the condition that there is no claimant to his innovation [1].
The rejection of the act of innovator: The Holy Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever creates something in this matter (our religion) that is not part of it, that thing is rejected.” In another narration, it is stated: “Whoever did something that was not in accordance with our order (religion), is rejected.
Bad ending of innovator: Satan likes to trap man on the precipice of polytheism and overcome him. If man is saved from this trap of Satan, Satan will spread the trap of innovation for him. In this sense, innovation is the worst sin.
Sofyan Thori, may Allah have mercy on him, said: ” innovation is more popular than sin to Satan, because sin is repented, but innovation is not.
Impairment of intelligence and senses of an innovator: An innovator considers good to be evil and evil to be good, and places Sunnah in the position of innovation, and innovation in the position of Sunnah. Huzaifa bin Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I swear by Allah that they will take care of innovations in such a way that if one of them is abandoned, they will say that the Sunnah has been abandoned.
An innovator is more prone to temptation and calamity than others, While Allah has warned against calamity: «وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنكُمْ خَاصَّةً وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ» “Keep yourself away from calamity that does not only affect those who do wrong (rather, if the wrongdoers are not stopped, their sin will burn dry and wet) and know that Allah has severe punishment Is there any calamity more dangerous than the calamity of opposing the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
In the case of innovation, truth and falsehood are mixed together: knowledge is a light that Allah gives to whomever He wills, and an innovator is deprived of the piety that guides him to the truth. If you fear Allah (and avoid disobeying His command), Allah will give you a special vision in the light of which you will know right from wrong, and will remove your sins and forgive you, because your lord has abundant grace and forgiveness.
