Hazrat Firouz Dilami “May Allah be pleased with him” (Part 9)
Firouz Dilami (May Allah bless him) and the Murder of Aswad Ansi
This is the full and detailed story of the murder of Aswad Ansi and the letter from the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Ibn Kathir, a prominent commentator and historian, summarized this story in his historical works. When the news of Aswad Ansi’s false claim of prophethood reached the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he wrote a letter and sent it to the Muslims living in and around Yemen through a person named Weber Ibn Yahans Dilami. In this letter, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called all the Muslims there to jihad against Aswad Ansi and encouraged them to attack and destroy him.
Hazrat Sayyedna Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) received this letter, and with full determination and seriousness, he sprang into action to fulfill the directives of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).
It’s notable that earlier, Hazrat Mu’adh (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had married a woman named Ramla from the Sakoon tribe. This marriage established a bond between the tribe of Sakoon and Hazrat Mu’adh, which would help him rally support. The letter eventually reached all of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) representatives, as well as ordinary people in the area. After consulting, it was decided that they should infiltrate and kill Aswad Ansi. Consequently, they agreed to form a partnership with Qais ibn Abdighous, as his sister was a maid in Aswad’s household, and he himself was the emir of Aswad’s army. There were ongoing disputes between Qais and Aswad, which fueled Qais’s anger and desire to eliminate him.
Moreover, Hazrat Firouz Dilami (may Allah be pleased with him), despite having a sister in Aswad Ansi’s house, harbored grievances against Aswad that had diminished Aswad’s dignity in his eyes. Driven by resentment, Firouz was eager to remove Aswad from the scene. As a result, three prominent individuals, who were also members of Aswad’s family, shared this animosity and were inclined to kill him.
Negotiations with Qais Mukshooh regarding the assassination of Aswad Ansi
Qais Mukshooh was thrilled by this opportunity and seemed to feel as if divine support was behind their efforts. Consequently, he concurred with the plan to attack the false prophet. All Muslims living in that region also agreed and entered into a pact.
At this critical juncture, however, the evil spirits and demons serving Aswad, whom he regarded as his angels of revelation, sowed seeds of doubt in his heart about Qais. Consequently, he summoned Qais to inquire about the situation and seek reassurance.
Qais took an oath and lied to him: «لأنت أعظم في نفسي وأجل عندي من أن أحدث بك نفسي.» Translation: “Certainly, you are more magnificent and honorable to me than if I had such a desire and will about you.”
Aswad responded: «أنت تكذب الملك فقد صدق الملك وعرف الآن أنك تائب عما اطلع عليه منك.» Translation: “Destruction be upon you! Do you deny the divine angel? That angel has definitely told me the truth; but now he knows that you have repented of your intention, which he had been informed about, and I will not tell you anything either.”
Then Qais Mukshooh left the presence of Aswad Ansi and went to his companions, who were Firouz and Davozia, and informed them of what had happened. They asked Qais what he thought about the matter. While they were consulting with each other, one of the black servants noticed them and informed Aswad. He summoned everyone before him and said to them: «ألم أشرّفكم على قومكم؟» Translation: “Did I not grant you honor and position over your people?”
“Yes,” all three replied. Aswad continued: “Then what is this word that reaches me from the angels (the same jinns and devils) about you?” They replied: “If you hear such words about us, then fire us now!” He warned them: “Don’t let me see anything from you anymore; otherwise, I will fire you!”
After this, everyone left the room and went outside; but they felt very suspicious and threatened. At the same time, a letter from the Emir of Hamadan, as well as some Emirs of Yemen and other regions, reached him. This message indicated that everyone agreed on the murder of Aswad Ansi and would not spare any effort; they declared their obedience and support to the Muslims of Yemen and their opposition to Aswad Ansi.
Firouz Dilami stated: “We wrote in response to the aforementioned letter: «لا يحدثوا شيئا حتى نبرم الأمر.» Translation: “Don’t show any movements until we finalize the plan to kill him and make it certain and solid.”
