Allamah Ash’ari writes in his book “Rasālat Ilā Ahl al-Saghr”: “The 40th consensus: The Salaf Ṣāliḥ have agreed that the bridge of Sirat is a bridge that spans Hell, and the servants cross it according to their deeds, differing in speed and slowness while passing from this bridge.”
Allamah Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, says: “The Salaf have agreed on the proof of the bridge of Sirat.”
The Sayings of Scholars
Allamah Safarini, may Allah have mercy on him, has stated the followers of the true religious opinion about the Sirat bridge as follows: “In general, everyone agrees on the proof of the Sirat bridge; but the people of truth prove it by its appearance, which is a bridge spread over Hell, sharper than a sword and narrower than a hair.”
Abdul Jabbar Mu’tazili and many of his followers have denied the appearance of this matter. They think that it is not possible to pass through it, and if it is possible, it would be a form of punishment; there will be no punishment for the believers and the righteous on the Day of Resurrection. This refers to the way to Paradise mentioned in this verse, where Allah the Most High says: «سَيَهْدِيَهُمْ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَهُمْ» ([Allah] will guide them and bring their affairs to perfection.) It also refers to the way to Hell, which is indicated by this verse: Allah (S.W.T) says: «فَاهْدِهُمْ إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ» (Guide them to Hell.)
Abul Hasan Ash’ari, may Allah have mercy on him, writes: “The scholars agree that the Sirat is a long bridge above Hell that the servants cross according to their deeds, and accordingly, they differ in speed and slowness.”
Qazi Ayyaz, may Allah have mercy on him, says: “The issue is the authenticity of the Sirat bridge and belief in it. The predecessors agree on accepting it based on its apparent meaning without justification or interpretation. Allah Almighty knows best its reality.”
Allamah Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, after mentioning the hadiths about the bridge of Siret, writes: “The bridge of Sirat is proven by the hadiths that were mentioned, and the religion of truth is also a proof of it.”
