One of the fundamental issues that has drawn the attention of various religions and cultures throughout history is the status of women and how they are perceived.
The individual and social status of women in a society is influenced by the dominant culture of that society. The prevailing cultural and religious ideologies determine the place of women: Are they considered part of humanity, entitled to the same rights and duties as men, or are they viewed as inferior beings, mere objects serving men?
In this article, we aim to examine the perspectives and the transformation that the Islamic legal system has brought regarding the status of women, ultimately proving that the most complete and precise understanding of women’s status is found in Islam.
Introduction
There is no doubt that throughout history, women have not enjoyed an ideal status or high regard; they have often been subjected to neglect, injustice, and oppression. However, with the growing awareness of humanity and the rapid advancement of human and social sciences, the question arises: What is the true status of women in society and family? How can the lost rights of women be restored?
In this regard, it can certainly be said that divine religions, especially the religion of the Seal of the Prophets (Islam), have made significant efforts to restore the noble status of women. Allah has opened the best path for the happiness and salvation of humanity, both men and women.
The life-giving teachings and models of Islam, despite greatly influencing the revival of women’s status, have often been overshadowed by clouds of ignorance and superstition. As a result, the community of women has not yet fully benefited from the sweet fruits of religious culture.
On the other hand, Western culture, with its dominance over material resources and communication centers, strives to impose its flawed model on nations around the world. Those who are still uncertain about the benefits of their own achievements and face deep internal challenges have initiated a cultural invasion against other countries. Therefore, in this era, referred to as “modern ignorance,” it is essential to accurately introduce the character and status of women as a significant step toward advancing the lofty goals of Islam.
