The Roles of the Prophet Mohammad, (PBUH), in the Sphere of Civilization (Part 11)
Prophet (PBUH) and Morals
Whenever a society is encouraged to respond to evil with goodness, and, if unable, to forgive, there is no doubt that such a society will progress rapidly toward development, growth, and civilization.
The promotion of ethics that the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) emphasized in his mission to manifest religion over all others and to complete moral virtues is evident in his saying: “إنما بعثتُ لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق.” This characteristic is not only present within Islamic civilization but, upon studying the divine words derived from this religion, it becomes clear how important and valuable this quality is in an Islamic society.
Regarding the moral values presented by Islam, the noble Prophet (peace be upon him) himself embodies these values, as described in the blessed verse: “Indeed, for you in the Messenger of Allah is a good example.” It is essential to consider two key points:
First Point: The scope of moral teachings in Islam is so vast and comprehensive that presenting a complete list of these profound teachings is an enormous task. A brief look at the lasting narrations from the noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and his moral instructions reveals the breadth of these teachings. It can be said with certainty that the Prophet did not overlook any aspect, even in the smallest matters. The deepest, most subtle, and refined points of spiritual and moral education are conveyed in simple and concise statements, providing practical formulas for spiritual development.
Second Point: The moral teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), derived from the Holy Quran, are such that anyone, regardless of their intellectual or spiritual level, can benefit from them according to their capacity. The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) teachings are designed to ensure that all individuals can derive benefit, although those who are elite, knowledgeable, and insightful will gain far greater advantages from this vast ocean of knowledge and truths.
It is essential to understand that education and training in any society should not be exclusive to a specific group, leaving others deprived. Rather, the system of education and training should be inclusive, allowing everyone to benefit according to their capacity and ability.
By institutionalizing moral principles and standards among the people and providing practical examples in various fields such as research ethics, critique, engagement with ideas, livelihood, social interactions, sexuality, politics, governance, and dialogue, the Prophet (peace be upon him) laid the groundwork for the emergence of a great civilization.
