Reasons of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah
“Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah” has argued to demonstrate the significance of actions based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the sayings of scholars, which we will present separately below:
Verses of the Qur’an
Translation: “On that day, deeds will be weighed with truth; therefore, those whose scales of good deeds are heavy, they are the ones who will be successful, and those whose scales of good deeds are light, they are the ones who have harmed themselves by denying Our verses.”
In another place he says: «ونضع الموازين القسط ليوم القيامة فلا تظلم نفس شيئا وإن كان مثقال حبة من خردل أتينا بها وكفى بنا حاسبين
Translation: “And on the Day of Judgment, we will place the right scales in the middle, and no one will see any wrongdoing, and if [the good and bad deeds of each person] are equal to the weight of a mustard seed, we will bring it [in the middle], and We will complete the reckoning.
Allah Almighty says: «فمن ثقلت موازينه فأؤلئك هم المفلحون ومن خفت موازينه فأؤلئك الذين خسروا أنفسهم في جهنم خالدون»
Translation: “Those whose soles of [good] deeds become heavy, these are the ones who are redeemed, and those whose soles of [good] deeds are light, and these are those who have harmed themselves and will be eternal in hell.”
These verses and similar verses clearly and definitively indicate the proof of the measure on the Day of Judgment. In these verses, Allah Almighty has described the measure as heavy and light, and He has also said that these scales are the scales of justice, the one whose scales are heavy has reached prosperity and salvation, and the one whose bottom of the scale becomes light, will lose and will fall into hell.
Hadiths of the Prophet Mohammad, (peace be upon him)
It is stated in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “There are two words that are easy on the tongue and beloved and pleasing to Allah Almighty; But they are heavy in the scale, these two words: سبحان الله وبحمده، سبحان الله العظیم.
It is stated in Sahih Muslim that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Cleanliness is half of faith, and the word Alhamdulillah, fills the scale of the measure.”
Hazrat Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: “In the balance, nothing is heavier than good morals.”
The sayings of the scholars
Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) [died: 150 AHS] says: “The weight of deeds on the scale on the Day of Judgment is the truth.”
He continues: “And we acknowledge and admit that the amount is right; Because Allah Almighty says: «ونضع الموازین القسط لیوم القیامة
Translation: “And on the Day of Judgment, we will share the right balance.”
Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) [died: 241 AHS] writes: “We believe in the Bridge of Sarat, Mizan, Jannah, Hell, and Account, we neither reject it nor have doubts about it.
Abu Ishaq zajaj (may Allah have mercy on him) [died: 311 A.H.] says: “Ahl al-Sunnah have a consensus on faith in measure and that the deeds of servants will be weighed on the Day of Judgment.”
Asfarini (may Allah have mercy on him) [died: 1188 AH.] says: “The main point is that faith is based on the Quran, Sunnah, and consensus (Ijma), just like taking the scriptures.
Allamah Qurtubi, may Allah have mercy on him, writes: “Scholars say: when the calculation is finished, after that the weight of actions begins; Because the weight of actions is for punishment; Therefore, it is suitable to be after the calculation, the calculation is to establish the actions and the weight is to express and show their values, so that the punishment is according to it, as Allah the Exalted said: «ونضع الموازین القسط لیوم القیامة.
“And on the Day of Judgment We will weigh the right balance” it is possible that there are many scales that actions are weighed by and maybe they mean the same scales; So here it is due to the variety of actions that are weighed.
Allamah Taftazani, may Allah have mercy on him, in his book “Explanation of Beliefs” writes about measure: “Measure is something by which the values of actions are known, and the intellect is unable to understand its quality.
Note: By examining and researching the hadiths, it becomes clear that in weighing the actions themselves, the factor and the scriptures of the actions are included, that is why the commentator of al-Aqedah al-Tahawiyyah Ibn Abi al-Az Hanafi, may Allah have mercy on him, after stating the verses, hadiths and the sayings of the scholars, concludes as follows: “So the weight of the actions, the cause and the scriptures of actions were proved and it was also proved that the measure and scale has two levels, Allah Almighty is more aware of its qualities; Therefore, we should believe in the Unseen without excess or deficiency, just as the truthful and authentic Prophet (peace and be upon him) has informed us.
