Definition of democracy
Democracy has many definitions and different meanings have been presented, and like many concepts in social sciences, there is no comprehensive definition. Many definitions of democracy refer to the government system and refer to its foundations and intellectual principles; For example: Democracy is a term derived from the Greek word (Demokratia) in which the prefix demosbeh means the administration of the country’s foreign affairs is used against Polis (Polis) meaning the administration of the country’s internal affairs.
Today’s democracy in political terms means the supremacy of idealistic national power and government administration by the people.
Democracy is a form of government that is organized according to the principles of people’s rule, political equality, consultation with all people, and majority rule.
Some other definitions refer only to participation and elections; For example: “Democracy means the way people decide who should rule and what their goal should be.”
According to contemporary theorists, democracy in its most common sense refers to a type of government in which power is not in the hands of one or a few people but belongs to the majority. With this criterion, democracy can be recognized from other governments.
Two views can be mentioned about democracy in general:
1. Democracy is a government system that the above definitions refer to.
2. Democracy is a plan for society, whose goal is the individual and collective prosperity of all citizens.
In this view, democracy is presented as a value rather than a mechanism. Democracy is a way of life, although it is also presented as a form of government.
