Another reason that caused the general European people, especially the French people, to hate and distance themselves from the religious teachings and rulings of the religious men and to be inclined towards the opinions of the secularists, was the church’s stand against the legitimate demands and needs of the nation. If this ominous and bad attitude of the church did not take place against the wishes of the European nations, it might be possible that the European and French nations would not be inclined towards the writings and thoughts of the seculars.
Of course the church was somewhat excused for its growing doubts about the revolutionaries, but the situation had become such that the work was out of its hands; Because the emotions of the shepherds who had reached the point of destruction due to hunger and oppression, did not leave a chance for calm and rational thought and decisions, but forced the church to pay the debt of long centuries that it had cruelly taken from others and rebelled against them.
Maybe the farmers could not understand the thoughts of “Rousseau” and the criticisms of “Faultier”, but they could easily and calmly observe the scandals of cardinals and priests and their boastful wealth. The farmers had observed this statement of Thomas Jefferson with the eyes of his head, who said: “The priest in every city and age is one of the enemies of freedom.” He has always been the ally of the despotic ruler and helps him in his bad deeds”.
This caused the nations to overturn the cup of their anger on the church and shout behind the priest “Mirabo”: execute the last king with the intestines of the last priest.
3- Secret evil powers
Another thing that caused the creation of an atmosphere of irreligiousness and escape from religiosity among European nations was the existence of hidden forces among these nations, which led them to hate the principle of religion instead of rising up against oppressive religious men and made it an enemy and opposite to the word religion.
It was possible that the European nation would rise up against the church and confiscate its property and destroy its influence and control, but at the same time, it would remain a believer in its true religion and be faithful to its history and habits and imitate and implement its customs and rules.
But the presence of a factor and a reason made this nation hate the principle of religion and introduce itself as an opponent of religion, instead of opposing the cruelty of religious men. When the mobs and rebels rioted against the Bastille, they chanted only one slogan and that was “Bread”. But they had not yet reached the early results of their revolution when they realized that some of them were chanting the slogan of freedom, equality, brotherhood, etc. instead of the main slogan. This slogan was inculcated to them through others and they themselves did not have the ability to produce and build it.
When the guillotine was working and circulating in France and the victims were brought to it to be killed, they were executed for only one reason and that was enmity with the masses and the nation, but among them there were those who were executed for this crime while the people knew their innocence and considered them as supporters of the nation. What was more interesting was that someone read a statement of support for the people and the nation today, and tomorrow the same person would be executed for the crime of enmity against the nation!
