We have previously stated that Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah believe that the Imamate is obligatory and that there should be an Imam for the Muslims to uphold the rituals of the religion and to take the right of the oppressed from the oppressor, to protect the borders and gaps of the country from the reach of enemies and ill-wishers. To prove their claims, they provide evidence from the verses of the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the consensus of the Ummah. We will discuss some of these reasons below:
Verses of the Holy Quran
Almighty Allah says: «یاأیها الذین آمنوا أطیعوا الله وأطیعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منکم» “O believers! Obey Allah and obey [His] Messenger and [also] those who command you.” Imam Tabari mentioned a hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: “The first of the commandments are the emirs.” Tabari continues: “The most worthy word and the most deserving of it in terms of accuracy and correctness in this matter is the word of someone who says: It means the rulers and governors of affairs in the place where the obedience of Allah Almighty and the interests of Muslims are in it.” Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, says: “The appearance is this – and God knows best – this verse is general about all those in charge of affairs, such as rulers and scholars.” And correct saying is the same.
The method of reasoning from this verse: Allah Almighty has made it obligatory for Muslims to obey the first command of the Muslims who are like the imams, and the command to obey Him is proof of the obligation to establish the first command; Because Allah Almighty does not command to obey something or someone who does not exist, and obeying someone whose existence is mandated and recommended is not obligatory, and the command to obey is necessary for the command to create; So it became clear that creating an imam for Muslims is obligatory for them.
Among the reasons, this saying of Almighty Allah is addressed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: «فاحکم بینهم بما أنزل الله ولا تتبع أهواءهم عما جاءک من الحق»Translation: “So judge between them according to what Allah has revealed and do not follow their [personal] desires [instead of] what has come to you from the truth.” And the saying of Allah Almighty: «وأن احكم بينهم بما أنزل الله ولا تتبع أهواءهم واحذرهم أن يفتنوك عن بعض ما أنزل الله إليك» Translation: “And [we commanded] to judge between them according to what Allah has revealed and do not follow their [selfish] desires and beware of them, lest you be deceived to some of what Allah has revealed to you [ tend to falsehood”.
This is the order of Allah Almighty to His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to rule between Muslims according to what Allah Almighty has revealed as Sharia, and addressing the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is addressing to his Ummah as long as there is no reason for specifying it, and here there is no reason for specifying it; Therefore, this is an address to all Muslims to rule and decide on what Allah Almighty has revealed until the Day of Judgment, and the meaning of the establishment of the ruling and the Sultan is also the same as the establishment of the Imamate; Because establishing a ruling is one of the duties of Imamate, and it is not possible to achieve a good ruling except through the Imamate, then all the verses that order to judge what Allah has revealed are proof of the necessity of appointing an Imam who will take this responsibility. Allah knows best.
Among the reasons, this is the word of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted:
«ولقد أرسلنا رسلنا بالبينت وأنزلنا معهم الكتاب والميزان ليقوم الناس بالقسط وأنزلنا الحديد فيه بأس شديد ومنافع للناس وليعلم الله من ينصره ورسله بالغيب إن الله قوي عزيز» Translation: “Indeed, We sent Our Messengers with clear reasons and sent down with them the Book and the Measure so that the people should behave fairly, and We created iron in which there is [a source of] war and [also] benefits for the people, and until May Allah make known the one who helps his [religion] and his messenger in secret, surely Allah is the Mighty, the Victorious.
The responsibility of the Prophets, peace and blessings be upon them, and those who come after them and are their followers, is to establish justice between the people according to what is stated in the holy Book, and to support it with all their strength and power, and it is not possible for the followers of the Prophets to establish justice between people; except by installing an imam who organizes and coordinates the army and soldiers who strive to help the religion.
All the verses of Hudud, retribution, and etc.., among the rulings that the responsibility of carrying out and implementing depends on the existence of the Imam, are considered as reasons for this section.
