    Mu’tazila (Part 19)
    Reasons for Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al Jama’ah
    Quran verses
Almighty Allah says: «قل يعبادي الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم لا تقنطوا من رحمة الله إن الله يغفر الذنوب جميعا إنه هو الغفور الرحيم ([O Prophet, from me] say: O servants who have been extravagant, don’t despair of Allah mercy. Verily, Allah forgives all sins, He is indeed Forgiving.)
The way of reasoning from this verse is: Allah Almighty forgives all sins, so this forgiveness is general and includes all sins, and no sin is excepted from it unless it is proven by consensus.
قال تعالی: «وإن ربك لذو مغفرة للناس على ظلمهم» (And your Lord is Forgiving to people despite their wrongdoing.) The way this verse indicates the permissibility of forgiveness is that Allah Almighty has established forgiveness in the state of oppression, and it is also clear that this forgiveness isn’t for the disbeliever, so it was established in a lower level and the word “علی” is also based on this.
something implies; Because this word implies a state, so forgiveness is in the state of oppression, not in the state of disbelief; Therefore, this verse is generally used except for the unbeliever, so the perpetrator of a major sin is also included in this ruling.
The pardon and forgiveness of the Almighty Allah for the servants, which the Qur’an stated and the Ummah agreed upon, is only for those who commit major sins before repentance; Because minor sins are absolutely forgiven and major sins are forgiven after repentance, as Allah the Exalted Himself has said: «إن تجتبنوا کبائر ما تنهون عنه نکفر عنکم سیئاتکم وندخلکم مدخلا کریما» (If you stay away from the big things that you have been forbidden from, We will remove your [minor] sins from you and make you a worthy [and honorable] position.) In another place, he says: «وأقم الصلاة طرفي النهار وزلفا من الليل إن الحسنات يذهبن السيئات ذلك ذكرى للذاكرين» (And pray at both ends of the day and at the same time as the night. Yes, good deeds delete the bad deeds. This is a warning for those who take counsel.)
Ummah agrees that Allah Almighty forgives his servants, and the Qur’an has also stated this issue. Undoubtedly, the removal of the punishment of the perpetrators of minor sins is absolutely obligatory and the perpetrators of major sins are obligatory after repentance, so the removal of the punishment doesn’t mean pardon and forgiveness, so it is necessary that the punishment of the perpetrators of major sins be removed before repentance.
