The Political Life of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA)
Abstract
This article examines the political thought of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) and its influence on Islamic jurisprudence and politics. Emphasizing the principles of justice, judicial independence, and consultation (Shura) in the caliphate, Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) sought to uphold the foundations of Islamic Sharia in the realms of politics and governance. His steadfastness in opposing unjust rulers and his articulation of independent judicial views played a significant role in shaping the legal and judicial structures of Muslim societies. Furthermore, Imam Abu Hanifa’s (RA) approach to addressing political issues represents a clear model of governmental and legal reform in Islamic history. By analyzing his political thought, this article seeks to explain the impact of his ideas on the development of Islamic jurisprudence and the social advancement of Muslim societies.

Islamic knowledge, like an endless treasure, addresses not only the religious and individual aspects of human life but also provides guidance concerning social, political, and legal affairs. In this context, Islamic jurisprudence serves as a cornerstone of social laws and sound principles and plays a vital role. Imam Abu Hanifa, al-Nu‘man ibn Thabit (RA), one of the greatest jurists and thinkers in Islamic history, laid the foundations of a jurisprudential system through his intellectual contributions and scholarly efforts that have guided Muslim societies for centuries and continue to inspire scholars and intellectuals.
This article focuses on the political thought of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) and seeks to explore a significant part of his valuable intellectual legacy. It explains his political views, which emphasized not only justice and Sharia but also other important principles, including the independence of judges, the proper process of establishing the caliphate, and the necessity of standing against oppression and tyranny. By examining these views, the article also seeks to clarify the practical impact of Imam Abu Hanifa’s reformist efforts within the framework of judicial independence and the Islamic political system.
This work has been written not merely to highlight the greatness of Imam Abu Hanifa’s (RA) intellectual thought, but also to explain the importance of Islamic principles in the political and social spheres. At a time when many Muslim societies face various political and social challenges, revisiting and applying these ideas may provide valuable guidance for addressing contemporary problems.
It should be noted that this article is based on careful study and research of reliable historical and jurisprudential sources, the names of which are listed at the end of the article. Every effort has been made to present all quotations with academic accuracy and reliability. It is hoped that this work will open a new avenue for readers to gain a deeper understanding of the thought of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA).

Purpose of the Article
The purpose of this article is to examine the political life of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) and to highlight his role and influence during a period when major political powers, including the Umayyads and later the Abbasids, were in power. Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) lived during a period of complex political and social conditions in the Muslim community, a period marked by increasing governmental pressure, corruption among officials, and deviations from Islamic principles. Although he was a distinguished scholar and eminent jurist, he did not remain indifferent to the political and social circumstances of his time. Rather, as a figure committed to the principles of justice and fairness, he stood firmly against the oppression and tyranny of rulers. This study seeks to examine the various dimensions of his political positions and their impact on Islamic history.
One of the key objectives of this study is to clarify Imam Abu Hanifa’s (RA) position regarding oppression and injustice. Unlike some of his contemporary scholars, he refused to cooperate with unjust rulers and declined judicial and governmental positions offered to him by the caliphate.
This decision not only demonstrates his steadfastness and independence but also reflects his views concerning the responsibility of religious scholars toward the people and the establishment of justice and fairness. Studying this aspect of Imam Abu Hanifa’s (RA) life can provide a foundation for new perspectives on the role of Muslim scholars and intellectuals in political and social affairs.
Ultimately, this article aims to discuss the lasting influence of Imam Abu Hanifa’s (RA) political life on Islamic thought. This part of the study seeks to explain his role in strengthening the principles of justice and the pursuit of truth within Islamic jurisprudence and to demonstrate how his political life contributed to the development of an influential intellectual and political model.
