Sayings of the predecessors (Salaf) and successors (Khalf) about condemning and fighting with the Khawarij
Now we would rather talk about the opinions and viewpoint of the predecessors and successors of the Ummah in order to know what they said about this misguided and new sect and what position they took in order to get familiar with this sect and avoid sitting and accompanying them. Because the good of this Ummah lies in following the Salaf [predecessors], especially the four Imams (which are agreed among the ummah). It should be known that the ummah does not gather on error and these are separated from the congregation and are outside the four sects. Where the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: ” My nation do not gather on misguidance.”
The goodness and merit of the people is in following the four Imams of Ahl al-Sunnah wa Jama’ah, who are among the predecessors of the Ummah; As the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “The best of you are those who live in my time, then those who live in the second generation, and then the third generation in the next stage of the best”. It’s a date that is, the three centuries include the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his companions, the followers and the next generation of followers, may Allah be pleased with them all, whose sayings we are now looking at:
1. The first saying: the consensus of the Companions, may Allah Almighty bless them all: (Indeed, all the companions agreed against the Kharijites and not even one of them disagreed with the rightly caliph Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, in fighting with the Kharijites; rather, even those who were not with him were happy that the Kharijites were killed and his fight with them and his victory.)
2. The second saying: (Ka’b bin Al-Ahbar, may Allah be pleased with him, says: There is one light for a martyr, and ten lights for someone who kills Haruriyeh.)
3. The third saying: [Ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, considered fighting the Khawarij as an obligatory right for Muslims.)
4. The fourth saying: (Beshr bin Shafaf says: Abdullah bin Salam asked me about the Khawarij? So I said to him: They pray very long and fast most of the time, except for those who crossed the bridge and left behind (an allusion to gaining power) They shed blood and take property.)
5. The fifth saying: (Abu Motih Balkhi asked Imam Abu Hanifa: What do you say about the Mahkameh Kharijites? He said: They are the most evil Kharijites. I said to him: Do you excommunicate them? He said: No, but we fight against them, as our Imams, Ahl al-Khair, Ali (May Allah have mercy on him) and Umar bin Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, fought with them.)
6. The sixth saying: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: (And the leaders of the heretics are more harmful to this nation than the people of sin (debauchery); for this reason, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered to kill (and fight with) the Khawarij and warned and forbade war with unjust (and immoral) rulers.
7. The seventh saying: “In his Sahih al-Muslim, Imam Muslim has written a chapter- book on Zakat under the name of mentioning the Khawarij and their attributes, and the chapter on encouraging the killing of the Khawarij and the chapter on the worst people, then there are hadiths that show their condemnation and killing and that they are the worst people.”
8. The eighth saying: Imam al-Ash’ari, may Allah have mercy on him, said: [And as for the issue of (exiting with) the sword, then all the Kharijites accept and see it, except that the Abaziah that do not accept the objections of exiting and protesting with the sword, but they believe in removing the unjust Imams.]
9. Ninth Saying: Imam Abul Hasan Al-Multi (died 377 AH) addresses the Khawarij and says: (And according to the consensus of the Ummah, you are those who leave the religion of Allah, and there is no difference among the Ummah in this regard, along with your actions, from shedding the blood of Muslims to takfir of the predecessors and successors and making lawful what Allah has forbidden. Your appearance is our witness that you are those who have left the religion and those who have entered into rebellion, corruption and debauchery.)
10. The tenth saying: Imam Baghvi says about the fight with Kharijites and atheists: Sunnis and Jama’ah agreed that Isthikhlaf (appointment of a successor) is Sunnah and obedience to the caliph is obligatory, except that Kharijites and Mareqa opposed them (Sunni) and threw dispute into the fold of Islam.)
11. The eleventh saying: Qazi Ayaz says: “Scholars agree that Kharijites and their ilk are heretics and rebels; when they rise up in front of the Imam and oppose the opinion of the congregation and choose to separate from the congregation, you must fight them.”
12. The twelfth saying: Al-Imam Ibn Qudamah (died 620 AH) said: (And Allah willing, it is permissible to start killing them and end their injuries, considering the order of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and promising a reward to the one who kills them. Their heresy and bad deeds require the permission to shed their blood. As evidence of what the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has informed about the greatness of their sin, and that they are the worst of creation and have deviated from the religion and are the dogs of hellfire, and the Prophet of Islam, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has encouraged to kill them and said that if someone catches them, kill them like A’ad people.)
