Imam al-A‘zam Abu Hanifah (RA): The Role Model (part 24)
The Political Life of Imam Abu Hanifah (RA)
A Brief Introduction to Imam Abu Hanifah (RA)
Imam Abu Hanifah (RA), whose full name was Nu‘man ibn Thabit, was the founder of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence. He was born in 80 AH in the city of Kufa, Iraq, into a wealthy, merchant, and pious family, and passed away in Baghdad in 150 AH. His lifetime coincided with the flourishing of Islamic scholarship and civilization, particularly during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras.
At that time, Kufa was regarded as one of the most important intellectual and cultural centers of the Islamic world and was a gathering place for scholars, jurists, and theologians. Benefiting from this dynamic intellectual environment and interacting with leading scholars and jurists, Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) devoted himself to learning the principles of religion and Islamic jurisprudence. He placed particular emphasis on ijtihad (independent legal reasoning) and the derivation of religious rulings in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
One of the significant characteristics of Imam Abu Hanifa’s era was the diversity of jurisprudential issues and the complexity of emerging matters. These developments arose as a result of the expansion of the Islamic territories and their interaction with various cultures and civilizations. Such circumstances prompted Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) to develop a systematic and comprehensive approach to jurisprudence and ijtihad. He paid particular attention to principles such as qiyas (analogical reasoning) and istihsan (juristic preference), enabling Islamic jurisprudence to respond to the emerging needs of Muslim society.
Imam Abu Hanifah’s innovative approach to ijtihad, his precise views, and his profound knowledge of the religious sciences contributed to the establishment of the Hanafi school as one of the four major schools of jurisprudence among Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah.
The Importance of Imam Abu Hanifah’s Political Life in Islamic History
The political life of Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) is regarded as an important and influential dimension of Islamic history, as he lived during a highly turbulent and politically and socially sensitive period. Although Imam Abu Hanifa was a renowned jurist and ascetic, he was not indifferent to political affairs and the prevailing conditions of Muslim society. He took a clear stance against the oppression and corruption of the powerful rulers of his time. In particular, he had strained relations with the Umayyad rule and, later, with the Abbasids, because he opposed the authoritarian practices of some rulers and their failure to uphold justice.
The study and explanation of Imam Abu Hanifah’s political life is important for the following reasons, which may be summarized as follows:
    1. A Symbol of Resistance to Oppression and Despotism
Despite intense pressure from the rulers, Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) never accepted political or judicial positions, as he believed that cooperating with oppressive governments could, in some way, constitute an endorsement of their actions. For this reason, despite severe pressure from the Abbasid caliph, he refused to accept the position of judge and, because of his steadfastness, endured imprisonment and severe mistreatment.
    1. Emphasis on Justice and Freedom
Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) consistently defended justice, freedom, and resistance to oppression, drawing upon religious and ethical principles. Through his words and actions, he demonstrated that Islamic jurisprudence should be founded upon justice and fairness. He also encouraged scholars and the general public not to remain silent in the face of oppression.
    1. Influence on Intellectual and Political Movements
Despite strong opposition from the rulers, Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) became a model for future generations through his ideas, and later generations drew inspiration from his political and social conduct. He held a profound perspective on jurisprudence and religious thought and considered ijtihad and legal reasoning, in accordance with the circumstances of time and place, to be essential. This insight contributed to his recognition among those who valued freedom and justice in the Islamic world as a symbol of resistance and a model for opposing oppression.
    1. Social and Moral Influence on His Followers
Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) had considerable influence among Muslims, and for this reason, rulers were apprehensive of his views and opinions. Alongside teaching and disseminating knowledge, he called people toward justice and fairness through his exemplary character and provided a prominent example of a scholar committed to Islamic values.
In any case, the life of Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) became a symbol of standing for truth, resisting oppression, and supporting religious and social rights, leaving a lasting impact on Islamic history. As a jurist firmly committed to the principles of religion, he played an enduring role in the history of Islam.
His Birth and Childhood in Kufa
Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) was born in the year 80 AH in the city of Kufa. At that time, Kufa was considered one of the major intellectual and political centers of the Islamic world. Distinguished scholars and noble Companions of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) had been present in the city, creating a favorable environment for his intellectual and cultural development.
From an early age, Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) demonstrated exceptional intelligence and perceptiveness. Through his close association with scholars and learned members of his family, he benefited from religious and scholarly teachings. During his childhood, he met a number of prominent scholars and religious figures, whose influence had a profound impact on his personality and intellectual development.
During Imam Abu Hanifa’s childhood, the city of Kufa witnessed numerous political developments, as it was a center of political activities against the Umayyad government and a focal point for social opposition. Consequently, Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) became familiar with social and political issues from an early age, which later influenced his political inclinations and positions.
