Educational Lessons from the Story of Luqman the Wise (AS)
Lesson Nine: Shirk—The Greatest Injustice and the Darkest Wrong
Why Is Shirk the Greatest Injustice?
Linguistically, zulm (injustice) means placing something where it does not belong, transgressing the proper limits, supporting falsehood, turning away from the truth, and concealing reality. For this reason, shirk (associating partners with Allah) is regarded as the greatest injustice, because the polytheist commits cruelty in several ways:
    1. Injustice Against the Right of Allah the Almighty
The greatest right is the right of Allah over His servants—that He alone should be worshipped and that no partner should be associated with Him. The one who commits shirk violates this right by directing worship, which belongs exclusively to Allah (SWT), to someone or something else.
    1. Injustice Against Oneself
Human beings were created to worship Allah alone. When a person bows before created beings, idols, human beings, or any other creatures instead of the One True Lord, he degrades himself from the noble status of being a servant of Allah to the lowest level of servitude to creation.
    1. Injustice Against the Believers
History has shown that shirk (polytheism) and disbelief have often led to the persecution, oppression, and hostility toward the believers. In this sense, they also constitute injustice against the people of faith.
    1. Injustice Against the Reality of Existence
The polytheist reverses the true order of existence by placing the created in the position of the Creator and distorting the reality of things.
    1. Injustice Against Other People
Whoever, through words or actions, invites others to shirk and misguidance shares in their sin and has, therefore, wronged them as well.
The Three Categories of Injustice on the Day of Judgment
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) explains that acts of injustice will be recorded in three registers on the Day of Judgment:
    1. The Injustice That Allah Will Not Forgive Without Repentance
This is shirk (polytheism). إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ Translation: Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him. [1]
    1. The Injustice That Allah Will Never Overlook
This refers to the cruelty that people commit against one another. On the Day of Judgment, people’s rights will be restored in full. [2]
    1. The Injustice Between a Servant and His Lord
This includes many personal sins that may be forgiven through sincere repentance, seeking forgiveness, righteous deeds, and trials that expiate sins.
Therefore, Luqman the Wise (peace be upon him) sought to protect his son from the greatest injustice—shirk—while also warning him against every form of cruelty and transgression so that he would be prepared to accept all other moral and educational teachings.
The Prophetic Interpretation of “Injustice” in Surah Al-An’am
Allah the Almighty says: الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُم مُهْتَدُونَ Translation: Those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice—for them there is security, and they are rightly guided. [3]
When this verse was revealed, the Companions (RA) became concerned and said, “Which one of us has not wronged himself?” The Prophet (PBUH) replied, “It is not as you think. Rather, it is what Luqman said to his son: إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ Translation: Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a great injustice.” [4]
Thus, the Prophet (PBUH) clarified that the word “zulm” in this verse refers specifically to shirk, not to sins in general. This hadith also demonstrates that not every sin constitutes disbelief and that there is a clear distinction between sin and shirk.
    Types of Shirk
    1. Major Shirk (Shirk Akbar)
Major shirk is to associate partners with Allah by worshipping someone or something besides Him, such as idols, stones, trees, the sun, the moon, stars, angels, prophets, or righteous people.
Regarding this type of shirk, Allah the Almighty says: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ Translation: Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him. [5]
    1. Minor Shirk (Showing Off – Riya’)
The second type of shirk is Riya’, which means performing acts of worship or righteous deeds in order to gain people’s admiration and praise.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “I fear minor shirk for you more than anything else.” The Companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), what is minor shirk?” He replied, “Showing off (Riya).” He then said that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will say to those who showed off: “Go to those for whom you used to perform your deeds in the worldly life and see whether you can find any reward with them.” [6]
Therefore, according to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, shirk is the greatest injustice because it violates the right of Allah, harms both the individual and society, and distorts the true nature of existence. For this reason, Luqman the Wise (peace be upon him) began his foremost advice by prohibiting shirk, so that the foundation of faith and Tawhid would be firmly established in his son’s heart, preparing him to embrace all other moral and educational virtues.
