Resurrection After Death (part 8)
Statements of the scholars of the Ummah regarding resurrection after death
After the verses of the Noble Qur’an and the hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH) have been presented, it is necessary to look at the statements of the great scholars who explained and clarified the verses of the Qur’an and the hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH), because their understanding of the Noble Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) is greater than that of others, and they comprehended the concepts and meanings of the Qur’an well. Below are some statements of scholars on affirming the Hereafter and resurrection after death:
-
Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) says: “We affirm that Allah (SWT) will bring these souls to life after death and will resurrect them on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years, for recompense and reward and for the fulfillment of rights.[1] Allah (SWT) says regarding this:
«وأن الله یبعث من في القبور»[2] Translation: “And that Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.”
-
Imam al-Tahawi (RA) says: “We believe in resurrection after death, recompense for deeds on the Day of Resurrection, and …” [3]
-
The people of knowledge have unanimously agreed on the affirmation of resurrection after death. Al-‘Allamah Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘ari (RA) said:
“The consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah is that Allah (SWT) will resurrect people just as He created them the first time, barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, and will return them. All bodies that obeyed or disobeyed Allah (SWT) will be resurrected, and all limbs and skins, tongues, hands, and feet will testify against them on the Day of Resurrection.” [4]
-
Al-‘Allamah al-Saffarini (RA) says: “Know that, from a legal perspective, it is definitively and certainly obligatory that Allah (SWT) will resurrect all servants and return them after having created them, with all their essential parts intact. This is what ensures their continuity from the beginning of life to its end. Thereafter, Allah (SWT) will take them to the place of gathering for the final judgment. This is a reality established by the Book, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Salaf of this Ummah.” [5]
It is further mentioned in the book that resurrection after death is among the matters accepted by all religions, and that there are many proofs for it; rather, the Jews and Christians are agreed upon the affirmation of the Hereafter. [6]
-
Ibn Kathir (RA) says regarding resurrection after death: “The Hereafter is the resurrection of souls and bodies on the Day of Resurrection.” [7]
-
Al-‘Allamah Ibn Abi al-‘Izz al-Hanafi (RA) writes regarding the Hereafter: “Belief in the Hereafter is a matter indicated by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, reason, and sound natural disposition. Allah (SWT) has informed of it in His Book, established proofs for it, and in most surahs of the Qur’an refuted the creed of those who deny the Hereafter and responded to them.” [8]
-
Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi says: “Resurrection after death is true, and it will occur when Israfil (PBUH) blows the Trumpet.” [9]
-
Jamal al-Din Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Hanafi, the author of the book “Usul al-Din,” says: “Know that resurrection after death is true, and affirming it is obligatory.” [10]
-
Hamud ibn ‘Abdullah al-Tuwayjiri, the author of the book “Ithaf al-Jama‘ah bima Ja’a fi al-Fitan wa al-Malahim wa Ashrat al-Sa‘ah,” says:
“There are many evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah proving resurrection after death. Allah (SWT) commanded the Prophet (PBUH) to swear to the occurrence of the Hereafter and resurrection after death in three Qur’anic verses…” [11]
