The Position of Women in Islam (Part 54)
The Phenomenon of Violence Against Women in the West
Violence encompasses the array of abuses that women endure, including physical abuse, harassment, cruel treatment, and being coerced into actions against their will. This includes physical and psychological pressures, rape, abuse, intimidation, and being forced into adultery by individuals or groups. Each of these circumstances falls within the scope of violence against women.
One of the most alarming phenomena in this context is the trafficking of Muslim women and girls in so-called civilized countries, leading to the proliferation of various crimes worldwide.
According to United Nations estimates, more than seven hundred thousand women are trafficked annually and are subjected to some of the most egregious forms of exploitation. A UN report indicates that one-third of women around the world experience violence on a yearly basis.
Official reports from the United States state that “a woman is beaten every fifteen seconds, and seven hundred thousand women are raped each year.” Additionally, the estimated number of women who face sexual assault in the United States each year stands at approximately 81 million. In France, researchers have found that ninety-five percent of rape victims are women. In Canada, six percent of men confess to committing acts of violence against their wives. In India, eight out of ten women are victims of violence, with forty percent subjected to physical assaults and sexual violence.
In Peru, seventy percent of crimes recorded by police involve women who have been abused by their husbands. In Western societies, the humiliation faced by women manifests in various forms, including threats and seduction, which attack their dignity. This is equally as abhorrent as the exploitation women endure in beauty contests.
Today, unscrupulous satellite channels buy young girls for millions of dollars to promote corruption and encourage them to engage in adultery.
Despite global awareness of the widespread nature of violence and rape against women, the statistics still fail to fully reflect the true magnitude of the disrespect for human rights that these women face.
Many women choose not to report these violations out of shame or fear of being doubted or re-victimized.
Statistics published by the World Health Organization and other organizations indicate that seventeen percent of women worldwide experience physical violence in their lifetimes, while ten percent are victims of rape. In such circumstances, it is estimated that sixty million potential lives have been lost due to selective abortions influenced by racism or negligence in caring for women and girls, reflecting a belief in their lesser value compared to boys. Islam, a revealing religion, has explicitly forbidden abortion without valid medical justifications and has condemned practices such as burying girls alive and the traditions of ignorance.
