How Should I Raise My Child? (Part Five)
Paying Attention to Children After the Age of Six
Teaching Children the Rights of Their Parents
Children should learn to respect, obey, and show kindness to their parents while developing a close relationship with them. It is important to note that many instances of disrespect and disobedience in children stem from the negligence and lack of attention of their parents.
The Need for Children to Follow the Great Role Models of Islam
The primary role model for us is the Prophet of Islam, peace and blessings be upon him. Following him, the companions and followers of the Prophet served as exemplary figures in courage and generosity. Children should become familiar with the lives of these individuals and draw inspiration from their actions, such as courage, sacrifice, honesty, patience, perseverance, honor, endurance, and pride.
The stories and tales shared with children should be age-appropriate, engaging, and enlightening, emphasizing beautiful and interesting aspects to enhance their understanding. For example, the story of the Jewish man who approached the Prophet of Islam to ask for a loan is both instructive and inspiring:
A Jewish man requested a loan from the Prophet (peace be upon him), but the repayment time had not yet arrived. While on the way to Medina, he criticized the Prophet (peace be upon him), saying, “You are from the tribe of Banu Abdul Muttalib, a people who do not repay their debts and postpone them every day until the next.” When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) witnessed this incident, he became very upset and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to behead him.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded, “O Umar! My Sahaba and I need to handle this differently. You should instruct him to present his request properly and direct me to repay it appropriately.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) turned to the Jewish man and said, “O Jew! Tomorrow is the time to repay your debt.”
Strengthening Children’s Self-Confidence and Sense of Responsibility
As today’s children will grow into tomorrow’s men and women, we must prepare them to endure the hardships and responsibilities that lie ahead. This upbringing will equip them to fulfill their duties effectively in the future. To achieve this, we should focus on strengthening children’s self-confidence and encouraging them to express their opinions and feelings openly while showing courage.
Assigning simple household tasks can also help children familiarize themselves with responsibility. For instance, you can send them to a neighboring store to buy household items or ask them to wash the dishes at home. These tasks teach children responsibility and essential life skills, helping them gradually adapt to their responsibilities.
