Funeral Prayer and Its Educational and Social Aspects (Part Five)
    2. The Funeral Prayer Expresses Empathy and Sympathy
Empathy and sympathy are central tenets of Islam, as it calls on Muslims to embrace these principles in their lives. One of the key messages of performing the funeral prayer collectively is to express empathy and sympathy. When a group of Muslims wishes to extend their condolences to a family following the death of a loved one, the first step in actualizing this support is their participation in the funeral prayer.
Participating in the funeral prayer as a unified community demonstrates the compassion and solidarity Muslims have for one another. When one member of the community experiences sorrow, the others cannot remain indifferent; the least they can do at this difficult moment is to perform the funeral prayer for the deceased.
In this way, they collectively showcase their devotion and sincerity to the family of the deceased, sharing in the heavy burden of grief they carry. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Believers, in friendship, kindness, and cooperation with one another, are like a body; when one part suffers, the other parts share in the pain and fever.” This sentiment is clearly observed during the funeral prayer of a Muslim, where one person’s pain is met with the empathy of others.
    3. Respecting the Deceased
The third social point that underpins the performance of the funeral prayer is the expression of devotion to the deceased.
People often travel great distances upon hearing of someone’s death, enduring the hardships of the journey to participate in the funeral prayer for their Muslim brother. This act signifies their respect for the deceased and their commitment to demonstrate purity of intention.
Islamic teachings place a high value on the dignity and respect owed to the dead. From the moment the soul leaves the body, specific rules apply that Muslims are encouraged to follow to maintain the sanctity and honor of the deceased.
If the deceased has no family or home, Islam instructs that other Muslims should take responsibility for caring for the funeral arrangements, including the washing, shrouding, performing the funeral prayer, and burial of the body.
